Devlog

It's been a few weeks and I've been hard at work. I've been slightly more productive the past week, and managed to get a lot of conversations done, leaving just 12 regular conversations and 12 mini conversations left to finish in 2 weeks.

Steam post image I admit this conversation went a little bigger than I intended, at 42 reachable contexts.

Perhaps I could have done a better job writing this week, but I was inspired to work on an experimental feature I had always been planning for the future. This way I can work on something a little more artistic as a rest phase when doing coding.

The ambitious goal for Rogues of Europa was to have various art styles to view the game, allowing the player to choose from a pared-back Rogue -like interface to more detailed and decorative spritesheets. I also planned isometric and 3D, though maybe not in any official channels.

Steam post image An early test, when I finally got everything scaled correctly.

The picture shows the new "secret" rendering style, which is fully one-to-one interchangeable with the existing rendering style, merely from a new perspective. Admittedly it didn't look like much then, but I ported the wall rendering code to 3D, and I got this:

Steam post image Very cool.

Right now the functionality is a bit lacking. The first thing you'll notice is the camera angles are choppy and only go at 45 degrees. I intended this as a feature to keep it more compatible with the existing game, because you can switch on the fly to whichever you prefer. Currently you can only move forward, but you move forward with the camera angle, which is a very natural maneuver. The controls are currently W to move forward, and move mouse to move camera angle.

The game is not workable with the experimental setting primarily because not everything is rendered. Things like buildings, stalactites, petrified trees, mushrooms, lakes, etc. are not rendered yet. Mobs are also not rendered, so interactions, shopping, and combat are all basically impossible.

Progress will be very piecemeal on this and it will be an experimental feature for a while, at least a couple of months. In terms of plans for the future, I still plan on writing the last 12 conversations and mini conversations before Easter, and pushing an update with those before working on 0.3 in earnest.
