addedIt took a while longer than expected, but we finally have Chapter 2 in a place that it can be beaten from start to finish, minus a final cutscene we are still in the process of writing. While gameplay is mostly finished, the art team is still catching up to this chapter, so a lot of areas are still using sketches created by a non artist (me). Sorry to not share any new screenshots of Chapter 2 today. However...
changedAs of writing, Chapter 3 has not gone into full production yet, but we are hoping to within a week or two. We are still ironing out the plan to ensure the development goes smoothly. Earlier this year, our team decided we wanted to make a major change to Chapter 3 that would require a bit of retooling of certain story elements. While this might sound like it could cause some major changes to the final game, it leaves most of the core of Chapter 3 in tact to the original plan. Alongside that, these changes cause very few changes to the story outside of Chapter 3. The handful of changes that are coming from this are extremely small. I am personally very excited about the direction Chapter 3 is heading. It is very different from Chapters 1 and 2.
addedDuring this recent meeting about Chapter 3, our team also discussed the rest of the game. We have been working on this game since 2023 (2021 if you go back to initial concepting) and we all agreed that the scope of what was left was maybe going to take us significantly longer than we wanted. WORLD ENDS WEDNESDAY was initially envisioned as a 3 year project, but multiple delays have caused it to quickly look like it would be significantly longer. We discussed a handful of options on what to do, and we eventually landed on a new plan. This new plan is...
changedWe know what you are thinking first. "2 Chapters removed? This must mean a LOT of content is being cut!" I would like to first address this, as it is not nearly as bad as it might sound. Off the bat, Chapter 7 was intended to just be the final boss of the game, not a complete chapter. Chapter 4 is also going to be created with a similar mindset. We decided we would just combine that into Chapter 6. No content is being cut there. Chapter 5 however is a Chapter that we didn't have a solid plan of what it would be. We know what points needed to be there, but not a lot of what would fill the in between. The longer we thought about it, Chapter 5 seemed like it would be a very filler chapter with whatever we filled in the blanks with. So why not just make the game cleaner and add the story points we need to happen into the start of Chapter 6? A lot of these decisions are a little difficult to explain without story spoilers, but the main point I would like to say is - This decision isn't cutting content. It is cutting down on blanks of content we haven't fully envisioned yet. The finale of this game will now be a very beefy final chapter instead of being spread across 3 chapters. This change will keep the game cleaner AND get the game out sooner!
changedNo. I REALLY do not want to promise a year until the game is for sure without a single doubt in my mind releasing that year. Both 2024 and 2025 has seen their own delays in development, both being entirely out of our team's control and being impossible to see coming. Very likely, we won't promise a year until the year of release. I said this in a prior update, but the game will not release until after 2026. However, these changes will help us keep that post 2026 window short. I really appreciate our followers for being so patient with us in the long stretches without updates. The game does continue to move forward every month, even when real life events slow us down. We are working very hard to make a game that will satisfy the people who are excited. The next progress update will likely come near the end of this year, and I anticipate we will have a LOT to talk about then! Until next time!

Hi everyone! Today, we would like to share the latest updates on the development of WORLD ENDS WEDNESDAY!

Chapter 2 is (Almost) Beatable!

It took a while longer than expected, but we finally have Chapter 2 in a place that it can be beaten from start to finish, minus a final cutscene we are still in the process of writing. While gameplay is mostly finished, the art team is still catching up to this chapter, so a lot of areas are still using sketches created by a non artist (me). Trailer 2 Coming Soon?

Probably! I don't want to give a hard timeline to expect this trailer since it is depending on how quickly the art team can work, but I am hoping to get Trailer 2 out by the end of 2025. A good thing about having our first trailer be part of Paperverse 2024 meant that we could find reaction videos that included people watching our trailer. Listening to what people had to say both motivated us and also told us what things we should communicate in the next trailer. We have a plan in place, we just need to polish up content in the game to be trailer ready.

Chapter 3 Development

As of writing, Chapter 3 has not gone into full production yet, but we are hoping to within a week or two. We are still ironing out the plan to ensure the development goes smoothly. Earlier this year, our team decided we wanted to make a major change to Chapter 3 that would require a bit of retooling of certain story elements. Chapter 4 and Beyond

During this recent meeting about Chapter 3, our team also discussed the rest of the game. WORLD ENDS WEDNESDAY is now going to be 5 Chapters instead of 7

We know what you are thinking first. This change will keep the game cleaner AND get the game out sooner!

So does this mean you have a release window?

No. I REALLY do not want to promise a year until the game is for sure without a single doubt in my mind releasing that year. Both 2024 and 2025 has seen their own delays in development, both being entirely out of our team's control and being impossible to see coming.
