Some can boost productivity of the colony, or increase its' defensive capabilities, or become strategic hubs of your trading empire with transwarp beacons that allow you to deploy instantly from one colony to another. But be aware, the more developed a colony is, the more attractive it becomes to hostile factions and pirates to raid.
