changedThe Zodiac Mystery takes inspiration from this classic, establishing a closed circle of suspects who each hold a reasonable motive. As the story progresses, players may zero in on a particular character, convinced of their guilt. But in the next moment, a newly discovered clue could absolve them of any wrongdoing, casting doubt on another suspect. Identical to reading a Christie novel, this process sees the player analyzing multiple hunches, threads, and relationships, making the final reveal all the more sweet when it finally arrives.
addedSimilarly, in The Zodiac Mystery , each interrogation or new clue isn’t simply a step toward solving the case; they are meditations on human nature. What appears to be a simple case actually conceals overwhelming amounts of deception, pain, and hatred. In turn, players are forced to make difficult decisions when faced with the consuming darkness in a twisted world, just as the noir detectives of the past were.
fixedIn complete juxtaposition to classic detective stories, the truth in The Zodiac Mystery isn’t fixed. A random force determines which branching narrative path players follow, and their own choices decide the ending. Rather than observing the detective, you are the detective, and the story develops in a unique way around you. This ensures that players feel the stakes while they are at the wheel, as well as providing for new experiences and revelations upon multiple playthroughs.
addedOur dual timeline structure also puts an intriguing twist on the typical detective story. By simultaneously investigating the mystery across a span of twenty-two years, players get a fresh perspective on the case and the complex characters involved. Players will find themselves interrogating a suspect in 1913, then examining the same suspect’s autopsy report decades later in 1935. This distinctive story structure gives our audience an all-new way to interact with the classic elements of the genre.
addedThe Zodiac Mystery is proud to be a new installment in the well-established mystery genre. Its familiar tropes and archetypes create the perfect foundation for exciting stories to be told in new and innovative ways.

The mystery genre is as timeless as it is loved. The tension between the hidden and the seen, the thrill of piecing a puzzle together, and the satisfaction that comes with an astonishing reveal have captured audiences for centuries.

The Zodiac Mystery follows in the footsteps of this long tradition, from golden-age whodunits to dark psychological thrillers, but also attempts to subvert expectations.

The Astute Detectives of Yore

When discussing mystery, where to begin but with the most beloved detective of all time? Sherlock Holmes has become the absolute standard for a “classic detective” in the modern zeitgeist. While Holmes has countless mysteries under his belt, his locked-room cases were of the utmost pertinence to our team. For instance, in The Adventure of the Speckled Band, a woman is found dead in her bed, the door locked and windows barred. Her death is seemingly supernatural at first glance, but upon closer inspection, there is a disturbingly human cause.

The Zodiac Mystery dives into its introductory case with a similar locked-room murder, in which patriarch Tianbao Li is found dead in his sealed art studio. Just as in The Adventure of the Speckled Band, multiple investigators have explained his death with increasingly bizarre theories, unable to unravel the truth themselves. In fact, the locked-room murder is as intriguing precisely because it is infuriating, compelling the audience to continue reading, watching, or playing with a voracious thirst. With that in mind, we hope to allow players to channel their inner Holmes and scour the scene from top to bottom for any traces of the truth.

A few decades after Holmes’ debut, Agatha Christie entered the scene with her gripping and airtight stories. In Christie’s And Then There Were None, we follow a cast of ten strangers invited to a remote island. However, after they arrive, they are each accused of murder and subsequently killed off one by one. Though the story’s trajectory is apparent from the introduction of its eponymous nursery rhyme, Christie is able to maintain a tantalizing tension until the mastermind’s final, shocking reveal.

Film Noir and the Philosophical Detective

Film noir was a staple of the 1940s and 50s in the United States. Though closely associated with the mystery and detective genres, in noir, the truth isn’t so much about who pulled the trigger, but more about what drove them to it.

Perhaps one of the best representatives of the genre is The Maltese Falcon, an adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s wildly popular novel; it not only marked the birth of film noir, but also the morally ambiguous detective archetype. The story follows private detective Sam Spade and his investigation into the murder of his partner. Spade finds himself tangled up with a cast of prototypical noir characters, including a quintessential femme fatale. Parallels can also be found in Farewell, My Lovely, adapted from the 1940 novel by Raymond Chandler, another pioneer of the hard-boiled detective genre. In the book and film, detective Philip Marlowe is likewise thrown into a dark underworld of murder, corruption, and deception.

In contrast to Christie or Doyle’s neatly logic-based tales, these novels and films showcased a more haunting face of the mystery genre. Unlike the rational, witty genius of Poirot or Holmes, Spade and Marlowe are “detective philosophers,” moral observers in an immoral world.

Similarly, in The Zodiac Mystery, each interrogation or new clue isn’t simply a step toward solving the case; they are meditations on human nature. What appears to be a simple case actually conceals overwhelming amounts of deception, pain, and hatred. In turn, players are forced to make difficult decisions when faced with the consuming darkness in a twisted world, just as the noir detectives of the past were.

Piecing Together the Unique DNA of The Zodiac Mystery

When designing The Zodiac Mystery, we wanted to pay homage to the genre and its classics while carving out our own identity. While players are sure to find mainstays like locked-room murders, a quick-witted detective, and darker explorations of the human experience, our story also breaks from the mould.

In complete juxtaposition to classic detective stories, the truth in The Zodiac Mystery isn’t fixed.

Our dual timeline structure also puts an intriguing twist on the typical detective story.

An Ever-Evolving Genre

The Zodiac Mystery is proud to be a new installment in the well-established mystery genre. Its familiar tropes and archetypes create the perfect foundation for exciting stories to be told in new and innovative ways.

Whether you’re a seasoned detective fan or a novice sleuth, we can all agree that there is no thrill quite like a well-structured mystery, and nothing as gratifying as uncovering it yourself.
