An Uneasy Union

In any great mystery, there are stories that begin long before the first crime. For The Zodiac Mystery, that story belongs to Tianbao and Jinrong, the husband and wife whose fractured bond acts as a strange, nagging heartbeat at the core of this tragedy.

To outsiders, they were opposites who completed one another. But behind closed doors, their connection had seemingly decayed beyond repair.

Was their love simply an illusion, concealing a truth too sinister to confront?

The Reclusive Visionary: Tianbao

Tianbao, the first victim in our saga, left behind a legacy just as baffling as his murder. As a tried and true Aquarius, he was a man who sought truth in solitude. After studying abroad in Europe, he developed a taste for the finer things in life, filling his art studio with esoteric Western books, premium art supplies, and luxurious furnishings rarely found in Republican-era China.

This art studio became his hidden sanctuary. He would shut himself away for days on end, presumably reading or painting. On the surface, he was a classic tortured artist, known by few and understood by even fewer.

However, the diary discovered after his death revealed a much more sinister picture. Page after page, his psychotic ramblings chronicled the bizarre and the occult, with mentions of human sacrifice, summoning rituals to call upon the demon lord Ahriman, and cryptic musings about purity and rebirth.

Was it truly the work of a man losing his grip on reality, or a deliberate act of misdirection?

The Enigmatic Widow: Jinrong

In complete contrast to her husband, Jinrong ruled from center stage. As the headmistress of the couple’s dance school, she commanded every room with elegant precision. She was a bold, domineering Leo defined by her pride.

But beneath that polished exterior was a woman chasing reinvention. Once a dancer in seedy cabarets, Jinrong had long since buried that version of herself. She vehemently rejected her shameful past and the daughter who was born as a result; her marriage to Tianbao should have been a fresh start, but over time, the distance in their relationship seems to have grown insurmountable.

By the time Tianbao died, the couple barely spoke. Still, Jinrong mourned him with perfectly appropriate grace, a widow performing her grief despite their stilted relationship.

Was it only grief she carried, or something much heavier?

A Flimsy Facade, A Truth Concealed

Though seemingly different as night and day, Tianbao and Jinrong were bound by a quiet symmetry.

Both lived behind carefully constructed masks, with Tianbao hiding his obsessions and Jinrong concealing a past she wished to erase. In both their individual lives and partnership, they drew a harsh line between the hidden and the seen.

The more we look back at their lives, the harder it becomes to tell where devotion ends and deception begins. What began as a love story may have been the spark that lit the fuse of something far greater, and far darker, than either could control…

Point of Resonance: When Love Becomes a Mirror

When we designed Tianbao and Jinrong, we didn’t want them to simply represent “victim” and “suspect.” Instead, they embody a crucial question that runs through The Zodiac Mystery:

How well can we ever truly know the ones we love?

It’s a question that many of us are, sometimes unfortunately, forced to ask ourselves.

We imagine we’re drawn to others because they complete us, but perhaps it’s actually because they reflect what we fear most about ourselves. And when that reflection turns ugly, is love able to endure the crushing weight of the truth, or can it only survive when both parties agree to turn a blind eye?

Through Tianbao and Jinrong, we hope to inspire players to consider these questions and form their own questions about love as it pertains to “the hidden and the seen.”
