A Brilliant Detective, Walking in Sunlight But Dancing with Shadows

As one of the central characters in The Zodiac Mystery, Lianshen embodies our team’s exploration of the tension between human nature’s complexities and the light of idealism. He isn’t the typical heroic policeman from classic detective stories, but rather a soul shaped by fracture and renewal, constantly pulled between pain and growth.

The Surface Persona: A Spirited, Stylish Chatterbox

In traditional detective narratives, protagonists are often depicted as steady, reserved, and even brooding. Lianshen, however, was intentionally designed as a playful rebellion against this archetype. With his suspenders, flair for fashion, and rapid-fire speech, he appears almost out of place among the policemen of 1935.

On the surface, he seems lively, talkative, and even exaggerated in manner. However, this sunny disposition is a carefully constructed mask, a shield to conceal the sensitivity and insecurity born from a childhood scarred by trauma. This sharp contrast not only makes Lianshen more vivid and dimensional, but also lays the groundwork for powerful revelations to come, when his carefully crafted persona begins to peel away and his resilience is revealed…

During playtests, some players initially found Lianshen too chatty and excitable. But as the story unfolded, they gradually came to understand the depth of his character: a man fighting loneliness with exuberance, using noise to drown out silence.

Inner Drive: A Battle Between Childhood Trauma and the Desire for Redemption

Throughout development, we often asked ourselves, “When the line between light and shadow blurs, how does one remain true to oneself?” Lianshen grew up abandoned by his mother and tormented by his father’s alcoholism and violence. The only person who gave him warmth, his beloved sister-figure, Xiaohong, was then brutally murdered. These repeated blows would, in a traditional narrative, all but guarantee the birth of a vengeful avenger or an obsessive loner consumed by hatred.

Instead, we chose a more difficult yet optimistic path for him, one in which he transforms his pain into determination to protect others. His constant habit of “cheering himself on” isn’t just a superficial quirk; it’s a survival strategy learned in desperation, a form of self-suggestion that became his weapon against a cold world. Strength, for Lianshen, does not come from nature but from choice—he continuously makes the tough decision to resist despair when it would be easier to surrender.

At the heart of this choice lies Xiaohong’s warmth. On his desk sits a seashell she once gave him, the only tangible proof of love he has held on to.

Point of Resonance: Everyone Has Their “Lianshen Moment”

When shaping Lianshen, we deliberately highlighted his ordinary qualities, rather than his heroism. In many ways, he mirrors many of our own struggles in real life: hiding insecurity behind exaggerated cheer, yearning to be seen but fearing exposure, yearning for control but easily derailed by sudden emotions.

It is precisely his imperfection that makes him accessible. Lianshen is not an unattainable hero, but a typical person who insists on looking up at the stars even while mired in the mud. What he confronts is not only the black-and-white of crime and justice, but also the self-doubt, conflicts of values, and fragile reconstruction of spirit that everyone must face at some point. In that sense, he becomes someone we can empathize with. Inside each of us lives a version of ourselves who whispers encouragement while carefully navigating the dark.
