addedSteam post image It's Tanya here, Content Designer on Streets of Fortuna! Usually, the locations in Streets of Fortuna are procedurally generated. As you saw with Xin’s last devlog , the environments in Fortuna are usually very dynamic and adapt to the residents. But occasionally, we want a very special place to stand out and have a more intentional vibe. The first special location we made was our little cathedral, an iconic Miteran church, our world’s dominant religion. Steam post imageThe Miterans worship a single God and a martyr, unlike the old pagan ways. The way we build a location like this starts like any other. We first make the base out of our usual modular tiles. Then we make the item sets, which will procedurally generate based on the residents and some randomness. Steam post imagePews weren’t really common in our reference period, and instead worshippers would stand to hear the words of God, unless they were sick or elderly. Then Quinn and Mehrdad, an artist and a programmer, work together to make sure that our special centerpiece looks great and also works with our camera and navigation, which we call a Hero Tile. Steam post imageSo now we have a place the player can go and learn more about Miteranism and their Book of Learnings. At the start you might also be tempted to steal their treasures or bribe a priest to help you, but we’re already looking forward to when you can start your own heretical factions or cults someday too. For now though, you can only participate in Miteran masses and rituals, not become a priest. Finally, I set up the data to make sure priests will come work here. We’ve so far defined three ranks of priests -- the basic priests, the elders, and the Holy Mother, also called the Popess. There’s only one Holy Mother, and she’s probably going to be pretty hard to make friends with or even talk to until you have a good reputation. Steam post imageAfter that, I reused the modular tiles to quickly make a few neighborhood chapels to fill out the city. Now everyone has somewhere to go on worship day, Avyssdie. The exact type of Miteranism you’ll encounter will be a bit different based on how your world generates its superphysics. For example, if Blood is the most powerful force, the story of the Martyr is probably more about her suffering and her family, and Miterin rituals probably require some bleeding. Whereas if Revelry is more powerful, probably the important rituals of the church look a bit more like parties, with lots of wine and ceremonial dancing. Figuring out the underlying superphysics can also help you make better use of the relics and artifacts you find, since they also are relying on your world’s paradigms of miracles and power. Steam post image I don’t want to spoil the whole superphysics system just yet, but I know we’ll probably start with two or three and keep adding more forces and elements as we continue to update the game after launch. You can watch the video version of this update here:
changedWell, I hope you enjoy some of the love we’ve put into the game, as we get closer and closer to our beta test. As the Miterans say, Eidan! Until next time, Tanya
