Skye: The Misty Isle changes
Official Statement on Recent Claims & The Future of Skye: The Misty Isle
I want to take a moment to directly address misleading claims circulating about Skye: The Misty Isle and my professional decisions. Normally, I would not respond to speculation, but due to the serious and misleading accusations I feel it is necessary to address these accusations.
Setting the Record Straight
Skye Has Not Been Abandoned
While Skye: The Misty Isle has faced significant challenges, the project remains available, and I have always been transparent about its status. I fully acknowledge that Skye has fallen short of expectations, and I am actively working to address its issues.
The claim that Skye was a "cash grab" or that I intentionally misled the community is entirely false. The game was developed over several years with personal financial investment and dedication. Any suggestion of deception ignores the complexities of game development and the financial struggles that indie studios often face.
Addressing Claims of Dishonesty
There have been accusations that I "lied" about stepping away for personal reasons while continuing to work elsewhere. This is a gross misrepresentation of the facts:
Revenue from Skye is legally designated for repaying creditors, including volunteers owed compensation.
I cannot indefinitely work for free while meeting these obligations, which is why I have taken on another project to support myself and my team financially.
The new project I am working on is not "a basically identical game." Skye is a survival game, while this new project is fundamentally different in scope, gameplay, and vision.
Why Skye Remained on Steam
In October 2024, I resigned from Aurora Game Studios (AGS) due to an increasingly difficult internal work environment. Former team members themselves have acknowledged the challenges:
"Our treatment of each other, especially Mark, has been disgusting. It broke my heart that the only way he could see to escape this vortex of baneful behavior was to walk away from his own company." "This obsession with pretending to be a AAA studio, keeping the community at arm’s length and afraid to put anything out that's not super polished, is serving only to lose goodwill and undermine trust in us."
When I stepped away, I offered Skye and AGS to those remaining at the company, but no one chose to take over. Soon after, other team members also left, leaving me as the legal company director responsible for its closure.
Initially, the team discussed removing Skye
The Misty Isle from sale. However, in documentation provided during the company’s transition period, concerns were raised about the financial implications of doing so.
The document stated
"The decision to remove Skye: The Misty Isle from Steam’s store precludes the ability to generate further revenue that could have been allocated to repay creditors. While I understand that this will prevent poor reviews and player backlash due to abandonment of the game in an unoptimised state, this action effectively halts the game’s potential to fulfill its commercial promise and disregards the expectations of the player community."
While this was not a legally binding directive, it was a factor that contributed to the decision to keep the game available for purchase. The intention has always been to navigate these challenges responsibly, balancing financial obligations with the interests of players.
Regarding Deleted Steam Comments
Concerns have been raised about deleted Steam comments and posts. To clarify: these were removed by a volunteer due to personal privacy concerns following their resignation. However, I understand how this contributed to a sense of abandonment or a perception of attempting to suppress discussion.
What’s Next for Skye?
I had intended to announce this after completing more work, but given recent events, I feel it’s important to be fully transparent.
I have been working—when possible—to restore and improve Skye in line with its original hardcore survival vision. With so many changes coming to the core gameplay, Skye’s name will change to reflect this new beginning and a return to what made it appealing as a game originally.
After launch, a major patch was in development, but since some of the work was done by volunteers who were no longer contractually covered, their contributions had to be removed at their request. This rendered the game’s codebase non-functional. The only options were to revert Skye to its launch state or rebuild its core systems from scratch. I chose the latter.
Current and planned Improvements include:
Complete overhaul of core mechanics – Logging, harvesting, survival, clothing, heat management, world events, and environment interactions.
A richer, more immersive world – Expanded exploration and interactivity.
A brand-new UI, journaling system, and deeper world lore.
Updated combat, farming, navigation, and multiplayer – One of the most requested features.
Restoring six months of optimizations and fixes that were never released.
Mod support – Encouraging community-driven content.
I acknowledge that there has been another period of silence between December 2024 and March 2025. This was due to resolving financial and legal matters—something that is now behind me. Moving forward, I am committed to being more active on Discord and social platforms. Over the next few weeks, I will share video updates showcasing these improvements, rather than just screenshots.
As an example of the visual overhaul coming alongside gameplay changes with "Rebirth", here is the same location in the game, gameplay videos will follow:

Beyond Skye
Some of us have founded Re\Vive, a new studio that allows us to continue our creative work free from the legal complications surrounding AGS. Putting creativity at the centre of production rather than bureaucracy.
Our new project, The Eternal Throne, is an entirely new combat-focused game, built from the ground up with no shared code or assets from Skye. It is an ambitious and distinct project in its own right.
I remain unapologetically supportive of the vision and creativity of those at Re\Vive. It is an exciting new studio dedicated to crafting meaningful, immersive experiences. The incredible team there has been working tirelessly to bring their game to life, and they do not deserve to be attacked by association. Like all indie developers, they are striving to break into an increasingly difficult industry.
Meanwhile, Skye will once again be my personal endeavor as I work to fulfill its original vision and honor my responsibilities to the community.
Final Thoughts
It is disappointing to be attacked for taking time to be with my family after working seven days a week for three years—especially when these attacks only harm my ability to repay company debts.
I understand that this statement may still be met with cynicism, but at this point, I cannot say anything without it being challenged, and I get that. Instead, my priority is to show you the work being done, bring Skye: Rebirth to the level I envisioned three years ago, and support an emerging team that is eager to create something new.
Thank you to those who continue to support independent development, despite its challenges.
