Happy New Year everyone! 2025 promises to be a big year for Retroburn and Positron, and we're kicking it off with our first major update of the year.

As with the current Maze mode, all levels are unlocked by default and can be loaded via the main menu. Ultimately I am planning on putting in a progression system where you must complete the previous level to unlock the next. For Snake, this will likely mean hitting a pre-defined number of orbs (growing your trail to a particular length) which will then unlock the next level. Ultimately though, the leaderboards in Snake are based on the number of orbs collected, where you can compete with other players to see who can get the highest score.

My next priority is to get Arena mode in the live game. This will be single-player only at the moment (versus up to 15 CPU controlled enemies), but after that's like my next priority will be getting the local split-screen multiplayer all fully working in Snake and Arena game modes.

New Game Mode:

  • Snake: Classic gameplay where collecting orbs grows your trail.

Bug Fixes:

  • Made the ordering of colour shifts random, as intended.

  • Fixed some state issues with the menus.

General Improvements:

  • Added colour shift effect for all modes when changing the arena and bike colours.

  • Added new menu to leaderboard screen which shows Retry, Next Level, and Exit buttons.

  • Some general rendering changes here and there.

  • Added volume fading for some effects to simulate 3D audio. Needs more work but it's a start.

Todo:

  • Need to add a screen-edge marker, pointing towards the next orb.

  • Need to add left/right balance to the simulated positional audio.

  • Want to display the leaderboard info in the top corner of the screen while playing. So you know what your target is, and what your own personal best previously was.
