PLAYNESE: Master Japanese changes
From the Developer
This week's update focuses on giving players complete freedom over their Japanese studies by introducing fully customizable Anki flashcard deck, a new tank battle mini-game and more.
The biggest addition this week is the ability to create your own custom study deck directly inside the game using your PC, allowing you to study exactly what you want, whenever you want.
Create Your Own Custom Anki Flashcard Decks
Many Japanese learners use textbooks, novels, websites, or other resources that don't always follow the JLPT path. This new feature allows you to build your own study deck inside PLAYNESE and review them anywhere, including on the Steam Deck.
It's also perfect when discovering new vocabulary while playing. Create a new card and continue studying it using the built-in review system.
New Features
Create your own custom study deck
Add, edit and delete flashcards directly on PC using your keyboard
Supports Japanese keyboard input if installed
Add Front and Back card text
Add example sentences
Add personal study notes to every card
Review your custom decks on both PC and Steam Deck
View Deck
A brand-new View Deck option lets you freely browse through every card you've created without starting a review session.
Perfect for quickly checking vocabulary, kanji, grammar notes or example sentences.
Notes Support
Each flashcard now includes a dedicated Notes section.
Use it to add:
Grammar explanations
Memory tips
Extra vocabulary
Mnemonics
Anything else that helps you remember.
Official PLAYNESE decks will also gradually receive additional notes where useful.
Copy & Paste Support (PC)
Players using a PC can now:
Select text
Copy vocabulary / kanji
Copy sentences
And my favorite: Paste information from other resources into your own cards for faster creation
This makes creating large study decks much faster using existing study materials if needed.
Earn Coins While Studying
Every successful review now rewards you with one coin.
Coins can be used to unlock relaxing background music inside the Anki Jukebox, giving you another reason to keep reviewing every day.
Unlockable Study Music
Five new songs can now be unlocked through studying.
Once unlocked, songs automatically loop, allowing you to study without interruption.
More unlockable music will continue to be added throughout development.
Larger Interface
The entire custom deck interface has been expanded to better fit:
Longer vocabulary
Example sentences
Personal notes and future features
Current Limitations
At the moment, custom decks do not yet support:
Furigana displayed above text, so add them in brackets or in the notes section
Custom voice recordings
New Mini-Game - 戦車 (せんしゃ) Tank Battle
A new quiz mini-game has arrived in the Game Center.
Blast the correct Japanese characters before they reach you.
Features
419 Japanese characters included
Hiragana & Katakana
More than 350 JLPT N5 to N1 kanji
Choose between two difficulty modes:
Easy
Hiragana
Katakana
JLPT N5
Hard
JLPT N4 to N1
Correct answers earn money.
Wrong answers cost money, so accuracy is just as important as speed.
I got a little carried away and decided to create five different weapons, each featuring unique sounds and visual effects, alongside an all-new battlefield soundtrack.
Please note that while some mini-games support every JLPT level individually, others currently use Easy and Hard modes. These may be expanded into separate JLPT difficulties in future updates. They take time to create and check.
Some interface commands, such as the Exit button, will also gradually be replaced with Japanese wherever possible.
New Music Room Song
A new track has been added to the Music Room.
ゾンビスーパー = Zombie Supermarket
Game Center Improvements
Larger overall layout to support future mini-games
Redesigned game icons that make each attraction easier to recognize
More arcade machines and activities are already planned.
Spaceship
The spaceship has received new artwork.
First Person Mode inside the spaceship has also been fixed. More coming to space in future updates.
Other Notes
Development continues on additional JLPT study content, Kanji Tower floors, mini-games, NPCs, stories, music, and quality-of-life improvements.
Thank you to everyone who continues reporting bugs, sharing ideas, leaving reviews, and supporting PLAYNESE throughout Early Access.
Every review and every suggestion helps shape the future of the game.
See you again in next week's update! :)
