Not Quite Dead: Open World Survival changes
Development on Not Quite Dead continues, and this update introduces two major additions to the world: explorable bunker dungeons and a complete faction reputation system.
These systems are designed to give players more long-term goals after learning the basics of survival, while adding new reasons to explore, collect resources, and return to different areas of the island.
Bunkers Survival Dungeons
The first bunker dungeon is currently being integrated into the world.
Unlike ordinary buildings, bunkers are larger enclosed locations built around exploration, close-range combat, environmental danger, and valuable rewards.
The first bunker begins in darkness. Players must descend underground and locate an electrical control panel near the entrance.
After interacting with the power box:
the bunker’s electrical system is restored;
the interior lights turn on;
every player sees the same power state in co-op;
the power box cannot be activated repeatedly;
the restored power remains active for the current session.
The system is fully replicated, meaning a remote client can restore the power and the host will see the bunker illuminate at the same time.
The Role of Bunkers
Bunkers will function as dungeon-style locations where players must arrive prepared.
Players may encounter:
infected enemies in confined spaces;
contaminated areas requiring a Gas Mask;
military supplies;
hidden rooms;
environmental storytelling;
rare equipment and blueprints.
The first small bunker will also serve as the conclusion to the guided early-game progression.
The planned introduction currently follows this path:
Craft an Axe → Craft a Backpack → Find the Trader → Recover a Vehicle → Find a Weapon → Raid the Military Outpost → Recover the Gas Mask Blueprint → Craft the Gas Mask → Enter the Small Bunker → Explore the Island Freely
By the time players complete the bunker, they will understand gathering, crafting, equipment, vehicles, trading, combat, radiation protection, and exploration.
From that point onward, the island becomes much more open-ended.
The Faction System
Players will also be able to support three survivor factions located across the island.
Faction representatives accept Faction Tokens, a special inventory item found through exploration and gameplay.
Donating Tokens increases the player’s reputation with the selected faction.
Each faction contains five sequential reward tiers:
Tier 1 — 250 Tokens Tier 2 — 750 Tokens Tier 3 — 2,000 Tokens Tier 4 — 5,000 Tokens Tier 5 — 10,000 Tokens
These requirements are cumulative. A player who has donated 5,200 Tokens has reached the requirements for the first four tiers.
However, rewards must still be claimed in order.
Tier 2 cannot be claimed before Tier 1, Tier 3 cannot be claimed before Tier 2, and so on.
Personal Co-op Progression
Faction reputation is personal to each player.
In multiplayer:
the host and clients keep separate reputation totals;
donating removes Tokens only from the donating player;
claiming a reward gives it only to that player;
one survivor cannot unlock rewards for another;
each reward can be claimed only once.
Claimed rewards and donated totals are saved with the player’s current run.
Closing the game, reconnecting, or using Continue will restore the faction progression correctly.
Permadeath or deleting the current run will reset faction progression along with the rest of that survivor’s progress.
Meet the Factions
The Wardens
Soldiers and survivors fighting to restore order.
The Wardens focus on military supplies, explosives, weapon components, and close-range combat equipment.
Their current reward progression includes:
Grenade x5 Medical Box x2 Weapon Parts x20 Rifle Barrels x2 Shotgun Blueprint
The Foundry
Scavengers and mechanics rebuilding from the wreckage.
The Foundry values practical equipment, weapon construction, machine parts, and sustained firepower.
Their current reward progression includes:
MRE x5 Weapon Parts x20 Pistol Barrels x3 M27 IAR Blueprint M27 IAR Upgrade Level 3
The Lanterns
Medics and researchers exploring the contaminated island.
The Lanterns specialize in medicine, exploration, radiation research, and versatile survival equipment.
Their current reward progression includes:
Painkillers x5 Weapon Parts x20 Shotgun Barrels x2 M4 Blueprint M4 Upgrade Level 3
Donating Faction Tokens
Interacting with a faction representative opens a dedicated donation interface.
The menu displays:
the faction’s name and description;
its representative;
the faction logo;
current reputation;
progress toward 10,000 Tokens;
the player’s available Faction Tokens;
a custom donation amount;
a Donate All option.
Donations are processed by the server.
The server independently verifies the player’s inventory, NPC distance, active interaction, token quantity, and faction identity before accepting anything.
This prevents invalid or duplicated donations in multiplayer.
Faction Rewards
The main faction page displays all three factions side by side.
Each faction card contains:
its logo and identity;
current reputation;
a progress bar;
five visible reward tiers;
reward icons and quantities;
cumulative Token requirements;
item tooltips;
claim buttons.
Rewards can display several states:
LOCKED THRESHOLD REACHED READY TO CLAIM CLAIMED UNAVAILABLE
Claimed rewards are permanently recorded for the current run, preventing players from collecting the same reward repeatedly.
The inventory is also checked before granting an item. When there is not enough space, the reward remains available instead of being lost.
What’s Next?
The technical faction system is now functional, including donations, sequential rewards, personal co-op progression, persistence, and duplicate protection.
The next development steps are:
finishing the visual faction interface;
creating the three faction logos;
building each faction camp;
placing faction representatives in the world;
integrating the bunker into the main nighttime map;
completing the remaining quest chain;
final map polishing and balancing.
These additions bring Not Quite Dead much closer to a complete progression loop, giving players both short-term survival objectives and long-term reasons to explore the entire island.
Thank you for following development and supporting the project!
More soon.
