changedOriginal postTL;DR: The game uses the Proton build by default on Steam Deck, which causes a cosmetic bug: as a result it's best to manually choose the Linux build.
changedSwitching to the Linux buildBy default, Valve have selected the Proton runtime for Mysteries of Old Tokyo on Steam Deck. (More information on that later.)
changedSwitching to the Linux buildAlthough the Linux build offers a superior experience to the Proton runtime on Steam Deck, unfortunately as the developer I have no control over which version is used by default.

Update to the update

Hello all - just wanted to update this post to say that Mysteries of Old Tokyo is now verified on Steam Deck! Read more here:

Original post

Hello Tokyoites!

I wanted to provide an update on the Steam Deck version of the game. As you may have read earlier, my intention is to provide as smooth as possible an experience on Steam Deck, despite the challenges of the device for a point and click adventure game:

View on Steam At present the game is officially Playable on Steam Deck but there is something important to be aware of.

TL;DR: The game uses the Proton build by default on Steam Deck, which causes a cosmetic bug: as a result it's best to manually choose the Linux build.

Switching to the Linux build

By default, Valve have selected the Proton runtime for Mysteries of Old Tokyo on Steam Deck. (More information on that later.)

Although the Linux build offers a superior experience to the Proton runtime on Steam Deck, unfortunately as the developer I have no control over which version is used by default.

I have resubmitted an updated build for testing by Valve. Hopefully this will be approved soon and the Linux build will be default on Steam Deck.

However, until then, I recommend forcing the Linux build on Steam Deck for best results.

You can do this by:

  • Opening the properties for Mysteries of Old Tokyo (open it from the library -> click the cogwheel button -> click "Properties")

  • Going to the "Compatibility" tab

  • Ticking "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" and choosing "Steam Linux Runtime":

You only need to do this once. When set, your Steam Deck should now download the Linux binary and when you launch the game in the future, it will always default to the Linux runtime instead of Proton.

Apologies for the inconvenience and I hope the new version will be approved by Valve soon.

More info on the Proton font bug

Every game on Steam Deck goes through a "Steam Deck Compatibility Review" by Valve, where they test the functionality and performance of the game.

When Valve tested the Native (Linux) build on Steam Deck, they encountered a game freeze. As a result, they set the game to use the Windows build (via Proton) on the Steam Deck by default. Under "Game Info" on your Deck, you'll see "Proton 11.0 (Beta) selected by Valve testing."

Unfortunately, running under Proton causes another bug: certain characters are not shown correctly, such as the year picker arrow buttons here:

Steam post imageNow apart from this, the Proton build seems to work. The year picker buttons work and there seems to be no other significant impact on the game, but it is a bit annoying: the Linux build does not have these problems.

Hopefully this issue will be fixed soon, but thank you for your patience as we wait for an update from Valve.
