fixedPlanned updatesThere are a few minor bugs found before release, which will be fixed for the next update.
addedPlanned updatesNew achievements! Where possible, these will be configured so that you don't need to replay the game to unlock them (just launch the game with your existing save file).
fixedPlanned updatesI am still waiting to hear back from Steam regarding the Steam Deck Linux build . Hopefully this will be resolved soon, which will fix the text issues caused by the Proton runtime. I'd also like to move the game towards official Verified status for Steam Deck.
changedPlanned updatesSome slightly more out-there ideas: Sidequests, minigames and temples that give out fortunes. Help for Japanese language learners (mouse-over kanji definitions, etc.). A treasure cabinet in your office that updates when you unlock treasures.
addedDLCThe nice thing about the format of the game is that it lends itself well to DLC. There's so much more of Tokyo's history to explore, and when I was in Tokyo last, I found a brand new set of postcards in an awesome shop in Jimbocho.
addedDLCSome of these are existing locations in the game - in which case it would be cool to add them to the core game as "alternative views" - while others are new, like the Akasaka Detached Palace here. I can imagine a small DLC with maybe 2 chapters (6 puzzles) incorporating some of these new postcards as well as new puzzles for some of the core game postcards. I will, of course, keep you updated as plans progress.

A few notes after Thursday's release...

Thank you!

After over a year of work, I released Mysteries of Old Tokyo two days ago. It has been a strange feeling - or rather, feelings - anxiety and excitement and dread and joy all wrapped into one.

But I needn't have worried. It has been an amazing release - hundreds of people have already played the game. I shot through my first month target in about five hours. And by all accounts, you're really enjoying it! Which is awesome. For such a strange niche genre, I'm so happy to find it has resonated with so many people.

What really blows my mind is that (touch wood) there have been no major bugs reported yet. I'm sure there are still bugs out there ... but I'll let them sleep for now.

Please do review the game!

Even if you haven't finished it yet - even if it's not a very long review - reviews are so important on Steam for the algorithm, especially the first 10 reviews. At the moment there are 3. It would be awesome to get to 10 in this first week, and it'll only take you a few minutes! Leave a review here.

Future plans

Planned updates

  • There are a few minor bugs found before release, which will be fixed for the next update.

  • New achievements! Where possible, these will be configured so that you don't need to replay the game to unlock them (just launch the game with your existing save file).

  • I am still waiting to hear back from Steam regarding the Steam Deck Linux build. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, which will fix the text issues caused by the Proton runtime. I'd also like to move the game towards official Verified status for Steam Deck.

  • Some of the early puzzles are a little too easy/straightforward. At some point I'd like to run through and make these a bit more complex.

  • Some slightly more out-there ideas:

    • Sidequests, minigames and temples that give out fortunes.

    • Help for Japanese language learners (mouse-over kanji definitions, etc.).

    • A treasure cabinet in your office that updates when you unlock treasures.

If you have any more ideas for updates, or find any bugs or issues, please continue reporting them via Discord or the Steam discussion forums.

DLC

The nice thing about the format of the game is that it lends itself well to DLC. There's so much more of Tokyo's history to explore, and when I was in Tokyo last, I found a brand new set of postcards in an awesome shop in Jimbocho.

Some of these are existing locations in the game - in which case it would be cool to add them to the core game as "alternative views" - while others are new, like the Akasaka Detached Palace here. I can imagine a small DLC with maybe 2 chapters (6 puzzles) incorporating some of these new postcards as well as new puzzles for some of the core game postcards. I will, of course, keep you updated as plans progress.
