Repeated intro

In Hunger, food and drink are not punitive upkeep systems that require constant maintenance. They are deliberate, opt-in tools that reward planning rather than attention.
Food provides long-lasting bonuses that support your underlying playstyle. These effects persist over time and improve core actions such as loot identification speed, Stamina regeneration, or other sustained advantages. Food is about preparation and efficiency.
Drink, by contrast, delivers short-term performance boosts. These effects are more powerful but expire quickly, making them best suited to combat, escapes, or moments where time pressure is high. Used correctly, a Drink can decisively change the outcome of an encounter.
Understanding when to rely on Food and when to deploy Drink is a key survival skill. Proper use can mean the difference between extracting successfully and losing everything.
The Role of Food
Food grants temporary bonuses that improve specific abilities or senses. Each dish has a defined effect based on its ingredients. For example, consuming Stewed Apple increases container loot identification speed by 20% for 10 minutes.
Effects from the same food category do not stack. If you consume both Stewed Apple and Candied Apple, only the stronger effect will apply. Food effects stack with other progression systems, including masteries, trinkets, and equipment traits. Players who plan their loadouts carefully can use food to reinforce and optimise their build.

The Nature of Drink
Drinks provide stronger effects than food, but for a shorter duration. Their benefits apply quickly and are designed for immediate impact rather than long-term sustain.
For example, when consumed, Boiled Water enables the player to move 10% faster for 40 seconds. Players may use it to escape, to rush an attack, to even launch themselves across a gap in the terrain.
Food supports endurance. Drink supports bursts of performance. Choosing when to use each is a tactical decision. Like Food, combining their effects with many others in the game will yield extremely creative results.

Preparation is Survival
Food and drink must be managed deliberately, like armour or medical supplies. Every bonus contributes to your overall readiness. In Hunger, preparation is not optional. Poor planning can end a run as quickly as poor aim. Food and Drink can be purchased from NPCs, crafted, looted and obtained as quest rewards.
