Heritage - A Dragon's Tale changes
I'll list the patch notes as usual here, but please read through to the end as there's an important notice at the end regarding save data and the Linux version.
FIXES:
Playing a non-looping song at the music player NPC would cause the song to loop at the position that the previous looping song would normally end or loop at
Pressing Space Bar while standing in front of specific doors would cause the door animations to play over and over again as long as you kept pressing the key
Numbering bug where, when starting a new game with all save slots filled, the game would prompt you to pick a new save but the numbering started at 0 instead of 1
Weapon stats for one of the unlockable weapons would not get saved (weapon level and upgrades carried over but visual stats/text within the pause -> Stats menu wouldn't save)
Changing the weapon grade while the game was paused would not update the weapon's stats text in the pause -> Stats menu
The player could stand off the bottom of the screen instead of go to the next area if in the castle level they hugged the right-hand wall as they fell into the pit
Region naming inconsistency when leaving Settor Province and entering Kedoro when doing so from the small bridge connecting the two provinces
I realized after uploading this patch I missed an inconsistent bug where a lone patch of spikes could sometimes be walked on without suffering damage. Since this is such a small inconsistent bug I'll keep it on the backburner to be addressed in a later patch.
Other Important Announcements
1. Issues Running on Other Linux Distros
I am building the game and running it on Arch personally and it runs well from my personal experience. HOWEVER, I'm aware there are some inconsistencies with the game running on other distros of Linux.
Unfortunately, Game Maker does not give control over build options so some of the missing libraries that other distros need can't be added easily, to my knowledge. Nevertheless, I am looking into workarounds and fixes. For the time being, my suggestion for Linux users that wish to play the game and are experiencing issues would be to either run the game under Proton, Wine, or via a VM. This is very frustrating I know, and I am extremely sorry for any issues you are experiencing. As this is a pretty serious overlook on my part, I do not blame or condemn any unsatisfied Linux user for refunding the game, as the game at that point obviously failed to deliver what was promised. Rest assured however, I do hope to have this resolved in the future.
2. Save Data
I was somehow not aware of this at first, and part of it is likely due to how i always clear all my saves and start afresh whenever I make patches and test, but when I added support for Linux, the game would not build due to the original file name having spaces and apostrophes in it (the underscores in the game's data folder seem to have been added by Steam when installed). I therefore had to rename the game's working directory and filepaths to the game assets, which at the time I didn't think was a big deal especially as the game ran without any issues on both Windows and Linux.
When I brought the patches and fixes I had implemented on Linux into Windows, (I merged the updates from the Linux branch into Main using Git) the new working directory name got brought in. What this did however was change where save data is stored and read from, a serious blunder on my part. The original location for save data is in C:/Users/[user]/AppData/Local/Heritage___A_Dragon_s_Tale and the new location is: C:/Users/[user]/AppData/Local/Heritage___A_Dragons_Tale
You might be able to recover your save data by copying the old files over, however, there will likely be some degree of unusual/unpredictable results here or there due to how the last patch touched/addressed bugs with the save data and bestiary.
Again, I am very sorry for these issues, they all fall on me for not checking as thoroughly as I should have. Definitely some lessons to be learned from these two issues.
All that said though, hopefully things will be smoother going forward. I still want to make this a game everyone can enjoy and be the best it possibly can, and as always, I thank you all for your support and the bug reports ^^ Every one fixed is a step to a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
Finally, with all these announcements out of the way, here's your usual 'you can verify the game is up to date by the version info in the title bar and on the title screen' lol.
Hope you all have a great day/night!
