Fishing Planet changes
Hey Anglers,
We’re back with another look at the improvements coming in the Catch & Compete Update coming this Spring! In the previous Dev Diary, we introduced the new Rating and Matchmaking System. Today, we want to talk about the new Leaderboards.
Leaderboards have long been part of Fishing Planet, offering a fun way to see how you measure up against other anglers. When thinking of improvements to this feature, our goal was to make everything clearer and more transparent, while also making Leaderboards more engaging and motivating to participate in. Most importantly, players will now receive rewards for reaching the top positions on the Leaderboards.
With this update, Leaderboards page will feature three tabs: Global, Competitions, and Fish. Each category includes multiple options to choose from, effectively creating literally more than a thousand of different boards you can climb, allowing you to earn multiple rewards across them all.
Let’s take a closer look at what will change and how the new leaderboards will work.
The Global Leaderboards
The Global Leaderboards Tab will include time filters for week, month, and year, so you can view rankings for each specific period. Each leaderboard only shows results from its own timeframe, and when a new period begins, the previous one is no longer displayed.
Weekly Leaderboards reset every Monday, Monthly Leaderboards reset on the first day of each month, and Yearly Leaderboards restart on January 1. This means that every Sunday, every last day of each month, and on December 31, players holding top positions on the Leaderboards will receive their rewards.
You can switch filters as you like and select exactly what you want to see. Simply click on the time period and choose the one you want to view.
The other filter lets you choose from the list: Experience, Young, Common, Trophy, or Unique, and view the top players by the amount of XP gained during the selected period or by the number of the selected fish form caught during that time.
Steam post imageYou can also select Total Fish in the filter to see how many fish the top anglers caught during the selected period. By clicking on the position numbers, you can also see which rewards you will receive for finishing in that place.
Steam post imageKeep in mind that Leaderboards will feature regular fish and will not include Fish Monsters, Tutorial Fish and Mission Fish.
Fish you catch during competitions do count, and so does the experience you earn from them. So everything you land in normal gameplay and competitive events will still help you climb the Leaderboards.
Competitions Leaderboards
Competition Leaderboards work similarly to Global ones but focus specifically on competitive performance. Since competitions require more skill, experience, and practice, the rewards for top positions on these boards will be higher than on other leaderboards.
They will also run on weekly, monthly, and yearly cycles, so you can track who’s dominating over different time frames.
Navigating these filters works the same way as on the Global tab. In addition to choosing the time period, you can also filter by Rating or by the number of Wins in competitions.
Filtering by Ratings shows the top 100 players with the highest personal competitive rating earned during the selected period.
The Wins filter shows the top 100 players with the highest number of first-place finishes in competitions during the current week, month, or year.
Fish Leaderboards
Fish Leaderboards rank players by the record weights of specific fish species caught on a particular waterway during the current week, month, or year.
When you select a location, in the next filter you will see all the fish species that can be found there, highlighted in green so they are easy to spot.
It all looks quite clear and transparent, but what happens if two or more players end up with exactly the same results?
When players have identical numbers on a leaderboard, the system first checks who reached that result earlier in real time. The player who achieved it first takes the higher position. If the tie still remains, the game applies extra criteria to fairly determine the final positions on the Leaderboard.
Another important improvement that came alongside the new Leaderboards system is an update to the fish weight distribution algorithm. While working on Leaderboards, we also focused on improving and balancing how fish weights are generated, making the system more fair and consistent.
A part of this system has already been running on our live servers, and since then it has been significantly refined. With the full release, we expect fish weights in the game to be spread more evenly.
Rewards
As we already mentioned in the beginning, the new Leaderboards will come with rewards.
When a new period begins, players who finished in prize positions during the previous one automatically receive their rewards. These can include unique X-Series items, Premium Account time, Club Tokens, BaitCoins, Credits, and other valuable bonuses that make reaching the top more rewarding. We’re also adding brand-new exclusive items to the reward pool, making the climb up the Leaderboards even more desired.
What makes this system most exciting is the sheer number of opportunities it offers. With so many fish species across all waterways in the game, there will be more than a thousand different Leaderboards. That means thousands of chances to earn rewards every week, month, and year. You can receive multiple rewards at the same time if you place on different boards for different fish or parameters.
There will be something for everyone. You might focus on gaining as much XP as possible, catching large numbers of fish, landing the biggest specimens of your favorite species, or dedicating yourself to competitive activities. With the new Rating and Matchmaking system, participating will also be much easier for beginner players.
We hope the new Leaderboards system adds more excitement and motivation for everyone to jump in and compete!
