The world of Bylina is not only shaped by those who pass through it, but by those bound to it.

Guardians, beasts, and broken things inhabit its forests, ruins, and dark, long-forgotten places. Some protect what remains, others act on instinct alone, and some are simply the result of forces that have twisted them into something else entirely. Each of them reflects a different side of the world, from preservation to decay.

So, sit back and enjoy part 2 of the more unusual beings you can encounter in Bylina.

Grimwood

Grimwood is an ancient forest creature that looks like a tree-like monster and acts as the guardian of an old cave in the Village of House Spirits.

Massive, slow, and imposing, it moves as if the forest itself has come alive. It does not speak, but communicates through low, threatening growls that every living creature instinctively understands. Despite its appearance, Grimwood is not evil. It is territorial, defensive, and bound to an older natural order.

This makes the encounter with it feel less like a simple fight, and more like a clash with something ancient and immovable.

Nightingale The Robber

Nightingale the Robber is a legendary ataman, the leader of one of the most daring and well-organized gangs in the world of Bylina.

An ataman is a historical term from Eastern Europe, especially in Slavic contexts for leader or commander of a group, usually irregular fighters, raiders, or a band.

A man in his forties or fifties, he is cold, calculating, and ruthlessly precise. He does not shout or boast; instead, his authority comes from silence, discipline, and the control he exerts over those who follow him. He speaks rarely, but when he does, it is with weight, often carrying a subtle edge of mockery.

He is known for his whistle (or something that sounds like it), a sound that serves not only as a weapon, but as a means of command. It signals, directs, and unsettles, reinforcing his presence even when he is not seen.

Nightingale rarely appears directly. Instead, his influence is felt through the actions of his people, spreading across the world in ways that are difficult to trace and harder to stop. Even when pursued, he remains just out of reach, always leaving himself a way to disappear.

He stands apart from the other forces that shape Bylina. While the world turns its attention to ancient powers and supernatural threats, Nightingale represents something more grounded, and no less dangerous: a human cruelty that endures, adapts, and takes on a legend of its own.

Gmur

Gmur is a cave-dwelling creature and one of the first true tests for a young bogatyr.

Massive, sluggish, and often half-asleep, it spends most of its time deep within its cave, waking only when disturbed. It is not intelligent, relying entirely on brute force to crush anything in its path.

It smashes through rock, causes cave-ins, and unleashes deafening roars that can stun those who face it.

While simple in nature, Gmur represents an important turning point. Defeating it is not just about victory, but about proving you are ready to move forward.

Acephalus

Acephalus are headless miners, dwellers of the underground, and members of an ancient, industrious people.

Powerfully built and highly resilient, they lack a head and, in some cases, bear their face within their torso. They communicate through gestures, low rumbling sounds, and rhythmic tapping.

Within the world of Bylina, the language is understood by everyone.

They value work,
