Bridgebourn changes
As I continue working on Bridgebourn, some of the new features occasionally trickle down into the demo. For patch 0.6.12, that includes a new lighting engine! There were 2 main reasons for this feature. One is that the previous lighting system was mostly calculated CPU side, so it wasn't the most performant. The other, is that I didn't like how I couldn't manually darken certain areas, like under forest canopies such as this:
Implementing this allowed me to do some more cool things! Like tall sprite tinting in a psuedo-3d way:
Not just shadows, but also colored lights:
While I was at it, I figured a closeness effect on the camera could be really scenic, and I think I'll keep the result!:
As a result, it brings other benefits too! Previously, shadows from clouds could really stack up on you, and make the area very dark - no amount of light could illuminate through these shadows. But now, this is fixed! Additionally, Bridgebourn is a CPU heavy game. This change allows the GPU to not be so idle, and instead take some of the work off of the CPU. You may experience a slight performance improvement! ːsteamhappyː
If you don't like this change, no worries. The old lighting system is still available in the video settings as Software (CPU).
Have fun treasure hunting!
