WorldShards changes
We recently had a lovely surprise, though we silently launched WorldShards on Steam, the project was noticed by quite a lot of people which is amazing.
With that said, this means that it’s time for us to pull up our sleeves, put on our thinking hats, and really begin to give you all some insight into our game.
So without further ado, we’d like to once again welcome you all to WorldShards, and now dive into the story and lore of our game, starting with our original fantasy world of Murrlandia!
Welcome to Murrlandia
Murrlandia is the name of the world that we’ve created for WorldShards and in the current (in-game) day, is a peculiarity amongst worlds as it is made up of many islands that float in mid-air.
Murrlandia was not always like this, in fact in the past it was a paradise planet, where the land was firmly on the ground, and the continents were separated by oceans and seas. It was a beautiful and vibrant planet, teeming with life; life dominated by the Meowkles.
The Meowkles
The dominant species of Murrlandia were (and still are) the Meowkles, a curious cat-like species. Before the world was changed, the Meowkles lived in peace and prosperity: rivers were clean and never ran out of fish, the land was fertile, and crops constantly yielded a plentiful harvest.
So how did the planet change from a regular paradise planet to one dominated by floating islands? To find out, we must look to the past.
The Cat-a-strophe
However, this ideal period of peace and prosperity was not to last. In a series of terrible luck, Murrlandia was struck by two disasters in short order. First, a cat-a-strophe struck, shattering the continents, and breaking them into islands. Not only that but the force of gravity on the planet was turned on its head and the islands levitated into the air. The lucky survivors were forced to become island-bound inhabitants, never leaving their island and surviving on increasingly scarce resources.
How did this happen? Little is known, but one thing is certain, the source of magic on Murrlandia, the Mana Stone, was the cause of the cat-a-strophe.
Magic and The Mana Stone
The source of magic in Murrlandia was the Mana Stone and was studied by the Meowkles for centuries. Thanks to their studies, the technology of Murrlandia was heavily influenced by magic. Amazing mechanisms, magical potions, medicines, and more, were made possible because of the Mana Stone.
Unfortunately, something went horribly wrong and the Mana Stone was ultimately the cause of the cat-a-strophe.
The Invasion
Soon after the cat-a-strophe, Murrlandia was invaded by a hyper-aggressive and brutal otherworldly force. Still recovering from the cat-a-strophe, the Meowkles found themselves at a huge disadvantage, and the invaders were able to establish a foothold on Murrlandia. Luckily, thanks to the Meowkle’s century-long studies of magic and the mana stone, and their natural agility, they were able to withstand some of the attacks and survive. However, the invasion did not stop with the first wave, more and more portals opened up, on Murrlandia, once again giving the invaders the edge.
Just as the situation looked its bleakest, a human appeared, seemingly teleported from a completely different world. The Meowkles instantly saw this human as the hero of legends and once again found hope in their hearts that they would be able to fight back against the invaders and someday in the near future, defeat the invaders entirely.
Current Day
Though the Meowkles are the dominant species of Murrlandia, our protagonist is a human who was transported to Murrlandia (from modern-day Earth) by an unknown force. Now, they find themselves duty-bound to bring life to the Meowkle's legend of the hero, fight back against the invaders, and bring peace back to Murrlandia.
