The Pioneer’s Journal #3 - The Frontier Table

When people picture the frontier, they often imagine wide open landscapes, wagon trails, and new towns rising from the wilderness. For the settlers themselves, those views were usually enjoyed only during a quiet moment on the porch. At the end of the day, what mattered most was what could be placed on the frontier table.

Letters and county records from frontier communities in the American Midwest frequently describe how entire towns would depend on a single successful harvest. For example, in the early 1850s, settlers in parts of what is now Iowa experienced several difficult growing seasons due to drought and early frost. Until the next harvest arrived, families relied on shared meals, hunting, and whatever could be gathered from nearby forests. Steam post image

In Wild West Pioneers, keeping the frontier table supplied works in a similar way. You must gather the raw resources and process them through different production chains before they become food for your settlers. A single source of food can carry a settlement for a while, but a growing town needs variety to stay fed. From gathering ingredients in the wilderness to processing crops and raising livestock, several paths can lead to a full table after a long day of work.

In the early stages, the wilderness offers the easiest way to keep settlers fed. Mushrooms gathered from nearby forests and hunted game can provide the first reliable meals. Soup and sausages are not a bad start at all! As the settlement expands, however, more dependable food systems become necessary. Farming grain in nearby fields and raising cattle in pastures help ensure that your settlers will not go hungry.
