it's springtime already! Version 3.88 was released month and a half ago and newly added clothcrafting has proven nicely stable. Keep on crafting in the free world! Development focus has remained in clothmaking additions, and for the upcoming version crafting cloth garments is the main thing on the table. It's been a lot of silent work, but now it's time for a little update of a big thing. So, prepare yourself for some screenshots - and some real world shots too.
As clothcrafting evolves in the next version player characters will be able to craft garments from linen, hemp and nettle cloth. Weaving the cloth by player characters is also planned, but at this point of development, cloth can be acquired by trading from the villages. Even though some find weaving a desired addition to the gameplay, it might very well be that growing your own flax and spinning the yarn needed even for a simple summer outfit is more work than most would enjoy. Well, you'll see then, but now you can buy some lengths of cloth from villages.
Tapio is happy to find a five-foot length of hemp cloth in this village.
The newly added cloth item is a length-based material, made in a standard width of two feet. Depending on the culture you can find lengths of linen, hemp or nettle cloth. Cloth lenghts vary from few feet to a maximum of probably around 10 feet. As the cloth is weaved with upright loom, and often indoors, there's a limit to its possible practical length. With addition of cloth garments also a new Cloth garments sub-menu is now added to Clothes section in Make menu.
Tapio traded the hemp cloth and linen yarn from the village and headed back to his homestead with cloth garment crafting in his mind.
When crafting cloth garments the cloth is required in length units, which is different from weight unit based clothcrafting we've used to with fur and leather clothes. For example, for a pair of trousers 8 feet of cloth is required. At this development phase cloth is as a tool type item, but they'll be likely re-categorized under a more suitable section.
The length of hemp cloth Tapio traded isn't long enough to craft a pair of trousers.
In the next screenshot we can see the cloth garment entries player characters can currently craft. The list and things are still very much under construction. Now as we can use any type of cloth for any type of garment there's need for some overhaul with clothing prototypes too. Moreover, using pieces of different types of cloth will produce mixed cloth garments which are called for example "cloth shirt" or "cloth trousers". With the possibility of crafting all the clothes by yourself also the hunt for small and rare garments will ease out. We'll be able to craft them footrags too! Believe or not, quest for footrags has been the most demanding quest for many characters (or players) over the years ;)
Tapio's hemp cloth is surely long enough for crafting several paris of footrags! What a joy!
And lastly, let's reveal ...
Traditional developers traditional summer look 2026
Posing in self-sewn traditional linen summer outfit which was very much the same during iron-age too. Shoes were used only when necessary. In the summer, they often weren't that necessary at all.
The trousers and cap crafted by Sami (UnReal World creator), and the shirt crafted by Erkka (UnReal World co-designer).
