Today we will be looking at the world of The Funnel and why in our alternate history did humanity move to the underground factories.

A SURFACE LOST

I would like to thank the Cultural Review for the honour of being asked to present you this brief overview of humanity's history. With the exciting and tragic prospect upon us, of the first humans being born without any experience of the surface world, I find the preservation of the human story to be more important than ever.

Let us begin with the foundational event of our new civilization: The Surface War. Over the course of the nineteenth century, the world raced down a path of amalgamation as our technological advancements demanded greater levels of global cooperation. Broadly speaking, this led to two major geopolitical shifts. In the west, there was the Unification Declaration between Europe and the Americas, and to the east came the wide-reaching Nippon Alliance. As the world shifted into a bipolar order, the scale of potential conflict only grew. When the Surface War finally did break out, it was the most horrific and all-encompassing event that any of us ever knew.

OUR SAVIOUR: THE FUNNEL

However, the same world order that led to our greatest failure, also consistently produced technological marvels that were beyond the reaches of our dreams. The pinnacle achievement of that great and terrible time was what the eleven scientists called the Collectivized Intelligence Device. Now, you will know this great work as the Funnel. The Funnel is a type of reasoning device which was created by processing every piece of human knowledge and intelligence to create one grand melting pot of the human will.

While the world began to tear itself part, the Funnel was wise enough to foresee where this destruction would lead. To safeguard humanity, the Funnel began the great excavation that led to the creation of over ten thousand underground factories.

THE WORLD AHEAD

Many of my readers often ask me why we cannot eventually move back to the surface and rebuild our lives there. After all, even if the environment has collapsed, surely our technological means which have enabled us to live underground, could also be applied to make a new life on the surface. To answer this, I will repeat a quote from my upcoming book The World Ahead:

"the move underground was not only vital for our physical survival, it was vital for our existential survival. As the act of living underground condemns humanity to perpetually feel the guilt of the surface war, it also ensures that no matter how distant our generations become, they will all know in their hearts the cost of war, simply by looking at a painting of the surface."
