In our last few posts, we covered the "what" and the "how." Today, we’re super excited to talk about the look, and to officially introduce District Themes!
We’ve always wanted Palettopia to be a canvas where you can build anything you imagine. To make that happen, we've developed a system where the entire architectural style of your city can change. District Themes are overarching aesthetic collections that dictate the era, culture, and visual vibe of your buildings—meaning this first theme is just one of many styles to come! We have so many ideas for different district themes that we can’t wait to share with you.
When we started working on The Districts Glow-Up Update, we knew that variety was the secret to making your utopian visions feel truly alive. To support our very first official District Theme, we didn't just add a few new buildings to the mix, we completely overhauled our library! We’ve bumped our base district assets from 28 up to 81 unique pieces. That’s a 352% increase to give your cities so much more architectural soul.
Our First Theme: The "Gilded Age"
You might notice a specific aesthetic taking shape in our updated building designs. For our debut theme, we’ve leaned heavily into the Late Victorian and Edwardian eras, sprinkled with a little Art Deco flair.
We love this theme because it captures such a fun moment in history: a time of rapid innovation and the birth of the modern city, full of grandiose utopian dreams (think Fritz Lang’s Metropolis!). We’ve integrated designs like tall steel radio towers and cranes, wraparound porches with bay windows, industrial chimneys and ornate theaters. It feels instantly recognizable and familiar, making it easy to spot the purpose of different districts at a glance while keeping that fantastical, creative city-building vibe.
It’s the Little Things
A city is so much more than just a collection of walls, and we want your environments to feel lived-in. To bring that cozy feeling to life, we’ve added a few extra layers of polish to these new assets:
Procedural Variety: Even within the exact same district type, buildings will mix and match so your skyline never feels repetitive.
Cozy Animations: If you look closely, you’ll spot chimney smoke gently drifting from smokestacks, fields of wheat swaying in the breeze and other little signs of life that make your city feel like home.
- Redesigned LandmarksWe’ve brought our landmarks up to the same high standard as our new district assets, making sure they stand out as the true crown jewels of your creations.
Any Era, Any Place
One of our biggest, not-so-secret dreams for Palettopia is to give you a canvas that can exist in any era and any place. Our vision is to fully separate District Themes (representing time periods and cultural influences) from Biome Themes (representing the environment). While we’re kicking things off with this Victorian-inspired look, this new system is the bridge to so much more. Whether you dream of painting a medieval fantasy castle, a retro-futuristic moon base, or a lush solarpunk paradise—this update lays the groundwork to make those future dreams a reality.
What’s Next?
Next time, we’re flipping the switch! We’ll be taking a look at the Utility District and exactly how the "Power Grid" brings a glowing new life to your city.
Now that you know District Themes are opening up a whole new world of possibilities, what architectural era would you love to paint in Palettopia? Cyberpunk? Medieval? Let us know in the comments!
