addedWelcome to our first dev log for Noxia Somnia: Ultimate Edition! We’re planning to release these development updates monthly as we journey towards our February 2025 release date.Going into Ultimate Edition we had one major goal: to take the player’s experience to the next level, whether it was your first time playing or the 50th. That’s why you’ll see many quality of life improvements across our enemies, fast travel, and lighting in Ultimate Edition that greatly improve the base game experience. (We’ll chat more about our new difficulty mode for seasoned players called Ultimate Nightmare in a later dev log!).
addedLighting EnhancementsAs you can see here, we’ve given rooms a more realistic, foggy effect with volumetric lighting. Rooms that used to be pitch-dark now have more depth.
addedNew room lightingPickups have been given additional lighting effects and particles, and Tristain’s flashlight has been given a stronger battery (more volumetric lighting). Lens flares have been added or improved for many objects.
changedNew room lightingCertain sprites now react more realistically to light, giving certain objects like our vending machines a glowy Look. Glass and metallic surfaces have also been reworked to have a better shine.

Lighting Enhancements

Understanding the critical role atmosphere plays in horror game design, we recognized that enhancing our lighting system could significantly elevate the overall feel of Noxia.

As you can see here, we’ve given rooms a more realistic, foggy effect with volumetric lighting. Rooms that used to be pitch-dark now have more depth.

Enemy Improvements

For the base game release, some enemy ideas didn’t quite make the final cut. One of those was our Bully frenemy here, who got stuck with a recycled NPC design.

We’re happy to share that the Bully is now…the fearsome Bruiser!

The Scholar has also been given the menacing design it deserves.

Fast Travel

Now when you use a portal, you’ll be given a menu of all the destinations in an act that you can travel to. You can go to any portal that you’ve unlocked which cuts down on back tracking (it was kind of boring).

That’s all we have to share for now, but there’s more to come soon! You can always follow Noxia Somnia on X / TikTok and join our Reframe Games Discord to stay connected with the community in the meantime.

Happy gaming!
