NGC-404 changes
Before we dive into this update, we have some exciting news to share.
NGC-404 Becomes NGC-404: Fractured Sector
We're pleased to announce a small rebrand.
As development has progressed, we've felt that the original title, while unique, didn't fully communicate the setting and themes of the game to new players.
To better reflect the universe we're building, NGC-404 is now officially:
NGC-404: Fractured Sector
The new title preserves the original identity of the project while giving players a clearer idea of the fractured political landscape, competing factions, and conflicts that define the sector.
The game itself remains the same. Only the name has changed.
Directional Shields
Until now, shields worked as a single shared pool surrounding the entire ship.
With this update, shields are divided into four directional faces:
Fore
Port
Starboard
Aft
Incoming fire now impacts the shield facing that was actually hit.
This means positioning matters more than ever. Keeping your strongest shield facing toward the enemy can be the difference between holding the line and suffering a hull breach.
Shield Power Management
Players can now actively redistribute shield power during combat.
Using the new shield management widget, you can prioritize a specific facing:
Reinforce the bow when charging directly into battle
Strengthen the rear while retreating
Balance power evenly across all shield faces
Increasing protection on one side comes at the cost of weaker coverage elsewhere, creating meaningful tactical decisions during engagements.
If you prefer not to manage shields manually, they can always be reset to an even distribution.
Smarter AI Shield Control
AI-controlled ships are now capable of adjusting shield priorities dynamically.
When under attack, ships will attempt to reinforce the direction receiving the most incoming fire, helping them survive longer in sustained engagements.
New Shield Visuals
The Engineering panel now displays shield strength for each facing individually.
Shield status can be monitored at a glance, making it easier to identify weak points and react before a section collapses.
Ships also visually reflect shield strength during combat, providing clearer battlefield feedback.
New Ship Manager
We've introduced a redesigned Ship Manager panel.
The new interface provides a cleaner overview of your fleet and makes it easier to inspect ships, review statistics, and manage your growing forces.

Performance Improvements
We've spent time optimizing large-scale battles and reducing overhead in intensive combat scenarios.
Our benchmark scenario featuring 30 Heavy Cruisers versus 30 Heavy Cruisers now runs significantly smoother than before. This is not our intended normal combat scope, as most battles are expected to be smaller, but we prefer to keep extra performance headroom for edge cases and future systems.
Performance optimization remains an ongoing effort, but these changes provide a solid foundation for larger fleet engagements in future updates. Small performance peek:
As always, thank you for following the development of NGC-404: Fractured Sector.
