This week we've been working on one of the biggest combat overhauls so far: replacing the old single HP bar system with a sectional damage model.

The Old System: One Number

Previously, every ship had a single health pool.

A hit anywhere on the ship reduced that number. When it reached zero, the ship exploded.

It was simple and reliable, but it also meant:

  • A shot to the engines was no different from a shot to the nose

  • Ships fought at full efficiency until the moment they died

  • The only feedback was a shrinking health bar

Combat worked, but ships felt more like health bars than physical objects.

The New System: Seven Hull Sections

Ships are now divided into seven separate hull sections:

  • Nose

  • Port Side

  • Starboard Side

  • Core

  • Engines

  • Rear Port

  • Rear Starboard

Every section has its own health pool, and where a shot lands now matters.

Damage is applied to the section that was actually hit, allowing ships to be gradually dismantled during battle.

Destroying Sections Has Consequences

Different parts of a ship now fail in different ways.

Engines

Destroying engines cripples the ship.

Its speed and maneuverability degrade as engine health drops, eventually leaving it struggling to escape or reposition.

Weapon Sections

Destroying a section that contains weapons disables those weapons completely.

Turrets mounted on destroyed hull sections go offline and disappear visually from the ship.

You can now literally shoot the guns off an enemy vessel.

Core

The Core is the heart of the ship.

Destroy it, and the ship is lost.

Because most weapons naturally aim toward the center of a target, the Core functions as the primary health reserve, while outer sections act as protective layers that can be stripped away over time.

What This Changes About Combat

The new system creates far more tactical possibilities.

You can now:

  • Cripple a ship instead of destroying it

  • Disable engines to prevent escape

  • Knock out enemy weapon batteries

  • Choose attack angles more carefully

  • Watch ships gradually fall apart during combat

Focused fire remains the fastest way to destroy a target, while spreading damage across the hull can systematically dismantle it piece by piece.

Better Visual Feedback

The UI now displays ship integrity as a segmented hull bar instead of a single health bar.

At a glance you can see which parts of a ship are damaged or destroyed.

When a section is lost:

  • Explosions erupt from the damaged area

  • Fire and smoke continue to burn from the wrecked section

  • Hull plating becomes visibly scorched and damaged

  • Status callouts such as "ENGINES DOWN", "GUNS OFFLINE", and "CORE BREACH" appear during battle

Finding the Right Balance

Introducing sectional damage required a complete rebalance of ship durability.

We increased overall ship health significantly and spent multiple balancing passes tuning how much durability is concentrated in the Core versus the outer sections.

The goal was to create combat where focused fire feels deadly, while still allowing ships to be gradually dismantled and disabled over the course of a battle.

Here's video to watch:

As always, thank you for following the development of NGC-404.
