Dear sailors, captains, and adventurers,
We’re pleased to announce the next stage of open testing — the Naval Playtest, launching on November 29, 2025. This stage is dedicated to one of the core systems of Neverseas — naval combat: its handling, pacing, balance, and the interaction between ships of different classes.
Before diving into the details of the upcoming test, we’d like to share a bit about our development approach.
Why We’re Running a Series of Playtests
Building a deep, dynamic, and truly living game is no simple task — and doing it without listening to players is nearly impossible. Neverseas is designed as a world where open-sea exploration, economy, discovery, and combat form a connected ecosystem. Any change to a single mechanic can affect dozens of others.
This is why we’re conducting a structured series of themed playtests. This approach allows us to:
Evaluate individual mechanics in gameplay situations that won’t always be available to players from the start;
Provide the opportunity to experience complete gameplay segments within the game itself, rather than in an artificial test environment;
Adjust key systems such as damage, maneuverability, and ship roles at the right moment;
Listen closely to community feedback and understand what works and what needs rethinking;
Improve the game before Early Access, not after.
The Naval Playtest is the natural next step. Since Neverseas is built around maritime travel and combat encounters, we want to ensure that naval battles feel impactful, tactical, and fair.
Main Focus of the Playtest — Naval Combat
Our goal is to convey the feeling of commanding a ship that responds directly to your actions. In Neverseas, you sense how your vessel behaves under your control: how quickly it accelerates, how its turning radius changes, and how it reacts when pushed into a sharp maneuver. As an enemy approaches, what matters is the distance at which your ship performs best — where you can turn cleanly, fire a broadside, and avoid return fire.
Your ship’s maneuverability and firepower are shaped by its mass and handling, while the ammunition you choose adds tactical options to use at the right moment. Naval combat in Neverseas is a sequence of precise, deliberate decisions where the outcome depends on how well you understand your ship and its strengths.
What Will Be Available in the Naval Playtest
All core naval combat mechanics of the current version;
Five ship classes (in their base configurations);
PvE encounters, with PvP testing added later;
A variety of weather conditions affecting maneuverability and gunnery;
AI ships using diverse tactics to create more tactical engagements;
A new damage system for hulls, masts, and rigging.
During this stage, we ask players to pay particular attention to:
the sense of weight and momentum of each ship;
handling and ease of issuing commands;
balance between different ship types;
whether battles feel dynamic without becoming chaotic;
visual clarity and readability during combat.
Your feedback will play a key role in refining the system for the next testing stages that will occur further as a part of development.
How to Join the Playtest
The Naval Playtest will be accessible directly from the game’s Steam page. Simply click “Request Access”, and Steam will automatically add you to the test when invitation waves begin.
Full access opens on November 29 for our Discord members and on December 6 for a number of those who requested access on Steam, and the playtest will run for several weeks. During this period, our goal is to collect as much
