How have you been? It's suddenly getting colder here and I can't wait for Winter! It's later in the year than I was hoping but it's been a wild ride and I have exciting news today along with a game update.

🌸🌙🌸Moonlight in Garland is now available on Nintendo Switch!🌸🌙🌸

This has been in the works for a loooong time and I’m so excited to bring Garland to a new platform. Thank you all for your patience and support while I've been working on this, it feels like a huge achievement self publishing as a solo dev and I'm so relieved it's out!

Now let's get back to the Steam Update! We're updating two version from 2.0.0.H > 2.0.0.I > 2.0.0.J because 2.0.0.I was the Switch release version.

The most exciting features are:

  • Pets - 3 new cat designs and 3 dog options.

  • NPC pets now move in/out with them.

  • Updates level art at the Beach, Uni and a few things in the Farm

  • Wallpaper - 2 new wallpapers to match the flooring with lots of new colours

  • Back ups now display in the save area where you can manually restore them to the current file or delete.

  • Lots of QoL stuff especially for controllers in menus, registering custom controls etc.

Important notes:

  • From this version on, back ups and save files will be managed from a meta file. This will happen automatically but always please make a copy of your save folder before updating just in case!

  • Custom inputs have needed to be reset in this version to accommodate new custom controller support options.

What's next?

Now that Garland is on multiple platforms the update process is a little more time consuming so I’ll be updating every ~3 months but with larger amounts of new content each time. If you want to preview new content sooner, I have a beta branch available for testers but you'll need to grab the details from the thread in Discord.

The next thing I'll be working on will be crossing a bunch of the smaller features off the Roadmap like new apps.

Notes PC/Mac:

  • From this version on, back ups and save files will be managed from a meta file. Please make a copy of your save folder before updating.

Notes Nintendo Switch:

  • This version fixes an issue where if a user backed up their Nintendo Switch account and restored it to a different user account, in rare circumstances save files weren’t being displayed in the save screen. On first load the files will now be updated and then displayed correctly.

  • Custom inputs have needed to be reset in this version to accommodate new controller options.

General:

  • Various typos and minor dialogue updates.

  • Visual - Fixed random building shadows popping in and out.

  • Player - Fixed diagonal visual jitter on player.

  • Inventory - Updated a few item names (cat food > pet food, typos)

  • Haruka’s Sketches - Fixed conflict that could remove sketch items during recipe card clean up.

  • Recipes - Fixed multiple cards spawning in some situations.

  • Weather - Fixed not loading nicely in some situations.

  • Animals - Add animal photos to tallies.

  • Tea shop - Fixed kettle collisions.

  • Nightly Summary - First night now says “moving in” not “day 0”

  • Nightly Summary - Fixed some issues with running overnight sequence to avoid furniture popping in during load.

Areas:

  • Farm - Added sheep to Nia’s Farm

  • University - Full update to beach area art.

  • Beach - Full update to Beach area art. (Buildings under construction are still coming in slowly)

Tutorials:

  • Tv tutorials - Updated images, adjusted CRT overlay

  • Tutorial - Fixed popups reappearing if you save/load in on day 2 after picking apartment.

  • Hotel - Bed in hotel now can’t be used on Day 2 during tutorials.

  • Ferris Wheel - Attendant now spawns at all times but you can still only ride during the welcome tasks at night.

  • Ramen - Added full health restore after eating.

Pets:

  • Added 3 new cat designs (Grey, Siamese 1, Siamese 2)

  • Added 3 dog options (Brown, Cream, Black)

  • Added some new dog and cat default names.

  • Some NPC’s pets will now move in and out with them if they live with you (Sophie’s: Spaghett and Meatball, Hannah: Ivy, Kirin: CatJake, Elle: Hemi)

  • If you have an existing roommate, their pet should be added to your apartment automatically, you will need to take care of them too.

  • Pet Bed UI - Updated handling of pet sprites, added NPC pet sprites and defaults.

Wallpaper:

  • Added 2 new wallpapers (plain and tiled) with a bunch of colours.

  • Updated wallpapers backend so they work the same way as flooring in items, room persistence and set up. Old wallpaper items should continue to work as is.

  • Updated wallpaper shop to stock new options.

NPCS:

  • Delivery dialogue now overrides after cutscene dialogue.

  • Minor NPCs can now talk (sometimes)

  • Sophie’s room - Removed the cat from her bed (It now visits only on Twilight Equinox to mess up her pillows)

Fishing:

  • Controller - can now use joystick or pad.

  • Default time is now 10 seconds.

Shops:

  • Antiques shop - Added bed/fridge/cooking pot to default sold items in case of load issues.

UI:

  • Initiatives - Added notification to the list when a stamp is available.

  • Initiatives - Selecting on the list will auto select the stamp if one is available (keyboard/controller)

  • Inventory App - Now called Backpack

  • Text Input - Max string set to 15 characters.

  • Context menus - Fixed showing in wrong areas when GUI size is awkward for window size.

  • Notifications - Removed some pointless notifications.

  • Buttons - Added force set when changing tabs to jump around less.

  • Tea/Cooking - Fixed sizing on smaller screens.

  • Text Input - Can no longer be selected by keyboard or controller.

  • Added option to decide what pauses when you leave the window.

Save files

  • Files are now logged and controlled with a meta file.

  • This will keep track of your save slots and the statuses.

  • Nothing should change front end but if there’s a save you have in your folder that isn’t showing, you can delete the meta file and it will check again.

  • PC/Mac: Note that it will only reference 8 slots so if you have a heap of files, you might need to move the ones you don’t want to use out of the folder to make sure it finds the right files.

Back ups:

  • Fixed backups not being able to overwrite in some situations.

  • Cleaned up back up logs.

Input:

  • Added better support for controller/inputs.

  • Keyboard - Added hold/release for keyboard UI navigation.

  • Custom Input - Updated input to automatically register linked buttons. Eg. registering left press will also register left hold and left release.

  • Controller - Added support for the joystick in menus and hold to move multiple buttons.

  • Controller - Fixed conflicts with X/Y button when menus open.

  • Controller - Updated inputs to register other presses like awkward D-Pad and hat buttons when we check for “any” input.

  • Help - Fixed keyboard triggering during text input.

Optimisation/Backends:

  • Depth sorting - Updated to avoid pop ins (meh still a wip)

  • Various changes to back end areas for platform compliance

  • Fixed some fruit loops and removed some old logs.

  • Split out a bunch of scripts for readability.

  • Fixed potential logging crashes from object_index

  • Much better handling for async functions.

  • Updated old script execute alt.

  • Pets - Converted dictionary to structs

This release was mostly bug fixes and changes to make the game compatible with Nintendo Switch. The main update was the addition of the back up list in the save areas to do manual restores.

This version was the release version for Nintendo Switch. PC/Mac skipped this version and went straight to 2.0.0.J.

General:

  • Various optimisations and adjustments to accommodate Nintendo Switch.

  • Various small fixes and typos.

  • Train station tickets now open 6am-8pm

  • Removed EA bed from random shop item rotation

  • Titles - Fixed pink clouds overlapping train in some situations.

  • NPCs - updated more functions to work on clamped_dt

  • NPCs - Fixed walking away mid intro scene.

  • NPCs - Added check to prevent talking during room change.

  • Place labels - Fixed not showing in some situations.

  • Logs - updated file clean ups

  • UI - Fixed save button not auto selecting

  • Screenshake - updated to clamped_dt

  • Music App - Changed play/pause buttons to be opposite sprites to be clearer.

  • News/Help/Building Apps - Now marked as read when hovering to select.

  • Recycling bin - fixed portrait alignment.

  • Harper PE 1 - Fixed drink heights and placement, also Jubsey’s placement.

  • Sitting - Fixed hair sometimes displaying in wrong order.

  • Fishing - Updated fish behaviour to be more consistent.

  • Fishing - Fixed possibility to soft lock after mini game in some situations.

  • Depth sorting - Updated to avoid pop ins (meh still a wip)

  • Festivals - Added force reset when starting new game during events.

  • Tea Shop intro - Fixed NPCs not leaving afterwards. Fixed dialogue exiting early if you ask to listen again.

  • Finance - Bank interest updated to 4%.

Files:

  • Added list of backups to save area and option to restore.

  • Converted to async file handling.

  • Added max back ups and better clean up functions to prevent them overrunning.
