Updated Game Director Story Demo

Earlier this summer, we launched an early demo of Game Director Story in time for the Steam Summer Festival. We wanted to give folks a small sample of our game for a limited time, but ended up getting so much great feedback from the community that we decided to leave the demo up.

Since then, we continue working on the game, and have made a few updates to the demo to address feedback from players, like making it clearer when new conversations are coming in or leaving the chat window, and how the game’s clock advances.

We’ve also added some key functionality that better represents the intended final game that we weren't able to get in time for the summer demo, such as not being able to freely switch between different conversations.

Today we’re rolling out an updated demo with these improvements and a number of bug fixes. We’re grateful for your input, and look forward to introducing more features (like a coming UI refresh) as we keep making progress on the game.

Here are all the changes we’ve made in this update, which are now available in the demo here on our steam page.

Improvements to Conversation Flow

  • Players can now swap between available conversations prior to starting a chat, as well as at any point where a chat choice can be made.

  • Conversation icons are now greyed out mid-chat to indicate if you cannot swap at that moment and must wait for the next chat choice.

  • When a chat is complete you no longer need to close it, you can now select another conversation from the list.

  • If the list of conversations is full and there are conversations that have been completed but not closed, the next new conversations will automatically replace/close the oldest completed conversation.

  • Conversation icons now animate in/out of the chat window, so it is more obvious when conversations expire, or are replaced with a new conversation.

Improvements to Game Clock

  • The time of day clock now advances per conversation line.

  • If all available conversations are done, the time of day clock will fast forward to the next available conversation that day (or to the end of day prompt).

Tutorial Updates

  • The tutorial screen was updated to better fit the overall art style.

  • You can now skip the tutorial if you’ve already seen it.

  • The tutorial is now available in the main game scene by clicking the “?” icon.

Quality of Life improvements

  • When your game ends before reaching the end of the 15th day in the demo, the result screens now indicate what day you made it to.

  • We added a second music track during gameplay, so you don't have to keep listening to the same track on repeat.

Bug fixes

  • The pause menu and tutorial screens (in game) now correctly pause the chat.

  • The end of the demo now always reflects Khepri’s story result correctly.

  • You can now click to skip the text quote at the start of the game.

  • Some more space was added at the top of the chat, so characters with big ears were not as cut off (we’re lookin at you Phil!).

  • The chat window sun icon now reflects the time of day correctly.

  • Updated the out-of-game survey & removed other in-game mentions of the Steam Summer Festival, now that we're keeping the demo up.

  • Several text edits throughout the demo days story beats.

Have any feedback on this update or for future ones? We'd love to hear it. Fill out the survey on the menus, or feel free to shoot us a message here on the Steam community, or through our Twitter account (@doubleblit)

Thanks for playing the demo, The Game Director Story team
