Fundoshinobi: The Naked Ninja changes
Today, for our first devlog, I’d like to share the story behind how I created our protagonist.
In the very beginning, he was just a "handsome ninja" named Hayato. It was a very standard, perhaps too ordinary, setting.
As I continued developing the game with that design, I hit a major wall. It was incredibly difficult to move the story forward. It felt like I was forced to write a clichéd heroic journey, explain his background in tedious detail, and keep the tone strictly serious at all times.
Even the adult scenes felt hollow. Since the logic was simply "girls are attracted to him because he’s a hottie," the progression felt flat and uninspired.
I spent a lot of time agonizing over the design. Since I’m not a professional character designer, nothing I drew seemed to click—no matter how much I added to the character.
While struggling with various ideas, a famous design philosophy suddenly crossed my mind:"Perfection is attained, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."
I thought to myself,"Fine, let’s just strip everything off."I started sketching wildly. The result? A masked, muscular man wearing nothing but a single, high-leg fundoshi.
That sketch resonated with me more than any design I had ever made. I realized that with this look, even the most "eccentric" or perverted actions would be self-explanatory. I knew right then—this was it!
And that is how our protagonist, the bold and intense identity of this game, was born.
As for his name,"Sho Takahaya,"I drew inspiration from the legendary ninja actor Sho Kosugi and the iconic "Super Ninja,"Ryu Hayabusa.
As a solo developer taking my first steps, I feel both anxious and incredibly excited. However, I will keep pushing forward with the same passion I felt when I first designed Sho.
Thank you for your support, and I’ll see you in the next devlog!
