What changed
- Balance
With Bullet Fest starting today, we wanted to let you know that we're part of it and are celebrating the occasion with juicy Devlog #2!
Finding a balance between (Dark) Humor & Censorship
Let’s get into the nitty gritty of humor in DeeSicks.
As we began to transition this game from a prototype into a fully fledged game, we realized that our team likes to push boundaries a little bit. We wanted to create something entertaining. For you, for ourselves. We made the first few bosses. They were funny, that’s cool. But was it enough?
Nope.
We can’t just stop at good enough. So we kept pushing. We made our bosses funnier, edgier! They ascended into the realm of ridiculousness.
Suddenly we had a Moon King Elvis, a amalgamation of our moon, Elvis, and a shiny, glistening, Japanese rockabilly pompadour hairstyle.
We got Moby Rich, a fat whale with fat stacks of fat necklaces.
And we got Faturn, a humongous man of enormous proportions who prefers to hang out as god created him: Who really needs clothes?
And the world (shout out to the reddit homies) reacted. This made us happy. Very happy.
And thus we took our beautiful creations of beautiful bosses and were ready to show the world! Surely, nothing can go wrong!
But as free-spirited, hippie dippie gamedevs we did not anticipate the fun crushing nature of modern algorithms.
Faturn had to cover up his 8x8 pixels!
We wept.
But the people of Reddit rallied for our cause, lamenting the loss of something beautiful and crying for artistic freedom.
Introducing our creative compromise: A moon.
So, technically everything is still there. Let’s see where this will place us on the censorship board ¯\\ (ツ) /¯
Lastly, the whole point of this: games are creative mediums that should experiment and not take themselves too seriously. With DeeSicks we wanted to push the boundaries a little bit, question the rules and bring something different to the table. A place where you can switch your brain off, embrace the absurd, and enjoy the glorious silliness of being human.
Peace out, DeeSicks Devs
