Finally, to mark the release of this “Battle Demo,” we are sharing comments from the development team.
*The comments below have been machine-translated and may differ in nuance from the original Japanese.
♠ Creator Comments
◇ Plot / Story Supervision: Naoki Hisaya
The Battle Demo available from today lets you experience CRYMELIGHT’s combat ahead of release.
The stories of Alice and the others will not be revealed just yet, but perhaps there are clues hidden within the battles that may help unravel them.
I hope you will take this opportunity to enjoy the world of CRYMELIGHT.
◇ Composer: Sakuzyo
Welcome to the world of CRYMELIGHT!
Since this is a dark fantasy, it is more classical and packed with even more fanciful charm than before.
I hope that even from this fragment, you can feel both a glimpse of the CRY series and how it has evolved.
◇ Character Design: YOGISYA
I played the Battle Demo as well, and it has an addictive quality that makes me want to keep trying again and really dig into it.
In addition to the character designs, I also worked on the monster designs and the in-game chibi characters. I hope you will play the Battle Demo and experience the world of CRYMELIGHT.
♠ Producer Letter
To all Invitees awaiting CRYMELIGHT
Hello.
I’m Isobe, the producer of CRYMELIGHT.
First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has been looking forward to this game.
Ahead of its November 5 release, we have now released a “Battle Demo” that lets you experience the game’s combat.
Today, I would like to share a little about the thoughts we put into this Battle Demo.
About CRYMELIGHT
CRYMELIGHT is a roguelike action game with a strong focus on story.
Our protagonist, Alice, finds herself lost in a mysterious afterlife called “Wonderland.”
To win her freedom from this world, she sets out on a journey to defeat the “Queen of Hearts,” who rules Wonderland.
Every girl gathered in Wonderland carries a different “sin” from her life before death.
The sin of hurting someone.
The sin of abandoning someone.
The sin of being unable to forgive oneself.
They suffer, hesitate, and confess those sins, yet still struggle to keep moving forward.
This game portrays how they face those “sins” and transform them into something beyond.
For example:
“Cheshire,” who hurt a friend with a lie.
“Mad,” who believes that only death can bring salvation.
And others.
Each carries different feelings, but all of them are woven into important stories within this world.
Another important theme in this game’s story is “turning back time.”
This structure itself is deeply connected to the roguelike genre.
The meaning behind challenging the game again and again is tied not only to the gameplay, but also to the story.
The World of Wonderland
Another aspect I especially hope you will notice is the art.
CRYMELIGHT’s Wonderland is beautiful, yet somehow distorted and unsettling.
We have carefully crafted every detail so that you can feel both a picture-book-like sense of fantasy and an atmosphere that tightens around your heart.
In this game, everything from the characters to the backgrounds is deliberately presented in 2D.
While 3D visuals have become mainstream in recent years, we wanted above all to preserve the “cuteness” and “fragility” that can only be expressed through 2D.
By depicting the entire world in 2D, we believe we can retain the appeal of the original illustrations while drawing players more deeply into the story.
To be honest, if we considered production efficiency alone, there are quite a few scenes that would be easier to create in 3D.
Creating everything in 2D means preparing an enormous number of illustrations and animation frames one by one.
Even so, we held firmly to our desire for “these characters to move exactly as they appear in the illustrations.”
That is why I especially hope you will pay attention to the smooth animation in the conversation scenes, made possible precisely because they are in 2D.
Their expressions and gestures, even the movement of their hair and clothing, bring a single illustration to life as though it were breathing.
I believe you will truly feel as though the girls are right there with you.
Why We Released the Battle Demo
Unlike the story and world, however, the controls and feel of the action are difficult to convey through words or video alone. I believe they are things you can only truly understand by holding a controller and moving the character yourself.
Until now, we have offered hands-on demos at a variety of events.
We are grateful that so many people have played them, but we have also heard many comments such as:
“It’s too far away for me to attend.”
“I want to try it, but I haven’t had the chance.”
We received many such comments.
This had continued to weigh on the development team.
That is why we released this Battle Demo: we wanted as many people as possible to experience CRYMELIGHT’s action for themselves.
This Battle Demo is not intended to let you experience the story.
CRYMELIGHT’s distinctive action, pacing, and overall play experience
are what this demo is designed for you to experience firsthand.
Even now, we continue polishing the full game almost every day as we work toward release.
In fact, the version currently in development already feels one or two steps better than the Battle Demo you are playing.
(Even today, we made adjustments such as significantly shortening the recovery frames after dodging.)
Because we make adjustments every day, we genuinely wish we could let everyone play the very latest version.
However, due to the review and distribution preparation process, demos inevitably have to be delivered using a slightly earlier version.
That is a little frustrating for us as developers, but we will continue carefully polishing every part of the game throughout the time remaining before release.
The entire development team will keep giving it our all until the very end so that the full version of CRYMELIGHT delivers an experience that has evolved even further beyond the demo.
Please Share Your Feedback
Every day, the entire development team reads the impressions and requests you send us through X and the Steam Community.
Sometimes your kind words encourage us, and sometimes your critical feedback helps us notice things we had missed.
Every single comment becomes valuable nourishment for making the game better.
Of course, it may be difficult to incorporate everything.
Even so, we will engage sincerely with the feedback we receive and continue polishing the game until the very end.
If you have any thoughts after playing the Battle Demo, please share them with us.
There is now only a little time left until release.
The entire development team will keep working with everything we have until the very last moment, so that CRYMELIGHT can become a game that remains in your hearts.
We look forward to welcoming you to Wonderland on November 5.
