The world of Bylina is not only shaped by heroes, bandits, and ancient rulers, but by the strange beings that exist alongside them.
Spirits, guardians, and creatures of unknown origin roam the land, each tied to its own place, purpose, or story. Some live quietly, either alone or with humanity, others disrupt everything around them, but all of them leave a mark on the world.
Here are some of the more unusual beings you can encounter in Bylina.
Kuzya Kuzya is a domovoi, a household spirit and quiet guardian of the home.
He appears as a small, bearded old man, kind, slightly naive, and endlessly talkative. He has a habit of calling everyone “Kuzya,” firmly believing that anyone he meets must surely share his name. He loves warmth, order, and simple comforts, and speaks with a sincerity that makes him both endearing and just a little strange, especially in the world of Bylina.
Despite his gentle nature, Kuzya’s emotions run deep. He can fall into quiet sadness if his home is lost, or sudden anger if it is threatened.
Through his stories and small requests, Kuzya reveals the human side of the world behind the folklore, and his presence is a reminder that what is being protected is not just land or power, but homes, families, and memories.
Master Toadling
Master Toadling appears as a peculiar figure you encounter early in the game, a rare goods merchant and antiquarian, though in truth, a cunning amphibious dealmaker. Despite his age, he presents himself in an overly theatrical, almost pitiful manner. He is quick to lament his misfortune, speaking of his “poor little toad children,” all while attempting to sell you something highly questionable. Sometimes, his panic feels oddly timed, almost rehearsed, but beneath the act lies a sharp and calculating mind. He may move slowly, but he thinks and negotiates with surprising speed.
Quote from Master Toadling: “But it’s Wednesday, how could this possibly happen to me… on a Wednesday?!”
In the story, Master Toadling plays an important role in setting events in motion. The situation surrounding him introduces the player to the world, its tone, and its sense of humor, blending parody with just enough unease to suggest that something is not quite right.
And as things unfold, it becomes clear that he may not be as helpless as he first appears.
Shroomie
Shroomie takes the form of a talking porcini mushroom, with small button-like eyes and a surprisingly expressive face.
He acts as a guiding companion throughout the Thrice-Ninth Kingdom and is a kind-hearted, albeit slightly cowardly creature; nevertheless, he is a deeply loyal ally. Having spent centuries rooted in place, he knows every dangerous path and every strange occurrence in the land. You will find him a good source of information, especially as he constantly mutters warnings like, “Oh, don’t go there, the red ones bite!” just before a dangerous encounter, yet despite his fears, he never abandons the hero.
Shroomie feels like a living guide, always ready with advice, reminders, or the occasional frantic suggestion. Even in the middle of danger, he finds a way to make himself heard.
He is the kind of companion who makes even the most unsettling journey feel a little less lonely and a lot more absurd.
Kolobukh
Kolobukh is a household spirit connected to the home, warmth, and bread.
Round, cozy, and often accompanied by the scent of fresh baking, he is one of the warmest supernatural figures you will
