So you’ve returned, then, let us tell you more of Bylina!
Most fantasy stories ask you to learn their rules before they let you in. Bylina does the opposite, it assumes the world - and its inhabitants already know how it works and expects those that (for some reason) do not, so just catch up on their own.
For example, in the Land of Towns, enormous giants are known to sometimes fall from the sky and bury villages beneath them, talking fungi form networks and argue about riddles, house spirits quietly decide whether your home will prosper or rot, and to top it all off, none of this is framed as shocking; the world simply works like this. As for the characters, they react the way people do in fairy tales: with resignation, superstition, or a shrug, not with disbelief.
The Shroomie is a fun example; you encounter it, but as for what exactly it is, or why it is, one just has to shrug one's shoulders and accept it as part of the Land of Towns!
In our last article, we wrote that Bylina originally tried to be serious, but that endeavour failed. When we realised, we decided to stop trying to patch things back together to be more serious, and instead, embrace the failure and “work with it” and make things much more unique!
What remained was a story shaped by cultural memory, childhood fears, and half-explained traditions. We’re not really trying to build a game that will impress you with lore, instead, we’re working on a game that rewards attention more than knowledge, and intuition more than certainty.
After all, if there is something we’ve learned from fairy tales, it’s that they rarely warn you about what’s coming. Things simply happen, and only afterward do you realize who was caught in the middle of them.
