[dynamiclink href="https://youtu.be/r0uHR6M1f7E"] 🚀 Dev Talk – Inventory Rework & What’s Coming in Update 0.4.0
Hey everyone,
Update 0.4.0 marks the first major content and feature-focused update for AEXXOS, and we wanted to take some time to walk you through one of the biggest system changes coming with it.
I also recorded a Dev Talk video going over this update in detail — you’ll find it attached to this post.
📦 The Old Weight-Based Inventory (Why It Had to Go)
When AEXXOS launched into Early Access just over two weeks ago, one of the first systems to show cracks was the weight-based cargo system.
The original design worked like this:
Every item had a numeric weight
Ships had a maximum cargo capacity
Exceeding capacity caused:
Ship slowdowns
Warp gate restrictions
Boarding / unboarding restrictions
While the idea sounded good on paper, in practice it was:
Clunky
Bug-prone
Hard to reason about
And most importantly… not fun
By Day 3 of Early Access, we made the call to disable the system entirely and start fresh.
🔁 Introducing the Slot-Based Cargo System (0.4.0)
Update 0.4.0 replaces weight with a clear, predictable slot-based inventory system.
🚀 How it works:
Starter Pod: 12 inventory slots
Each ship tier adds +6 slots
Dagger-class ship: 18 slots
Galaxy-class ship: 24 slots
And so on…
This gives players instant clarity:
You know exactly how much you can carry
No hidden math
No unexpected slowdowns
☠️ Death, Cargo & Bound Items
Inventory behavior on death is now much more intentional:
First 12 slots are reserved for bound items
These items are not lost on death
Tier-based cargo slots:
Can only hold items that drop on death
Are lost when your ship is destroyed
This keeps risk vs reward intact while removing frustration and edge cases.
⚓ Anchorage Zones – Replacing Weight Restrictions
One benefit of the old system was limiting boarding and unboarding based on weight. With weight gone, we needed a better solution.
Enter: ANCHORAGE AREAS
Designated zones used for:
Boarding ships
Unboarding ships
Visually marked with a white circle (visuals subject to change)
Prevents:
Using fast ships for instant escapes
Gaining unfair positioning advantages
This gives us clean, readable rules while keeping PvP and encounters fair.

💬 We Want Your Feedback
As always, your feedback directly shapes AEXXOS. Let us know what you think about:
Slot counts
Death behavior
Anchorage zones
Or anything else you notice
Thanks for being part of Early Access — 0.4.0 is just the beginning 💙
