Devlog #6 - Dialogue Progress, Side Objectives, Screenshots, 2020 WGDITA?

Alright, let's do this. So, dialogue was talked about briefly before. I plan on making this as detailed as possible. How will the dialogue system work?

addedThe player can interact with the world, by going up to certain things and getting a popup and holding the "E" key. This will then bring up the dialogue. I will also plan on adding certain things such as a phone for Frei, (the main character) after interacting with certain things, he will get lyrics for songs and sometimes doodle on those lyrics. Writing his own inspriation for his lyrics.
addedSelecting certain dialogue as NPCs respond is something I'm still working on, so please keep with me on this. I plan on adding certain bubbles below or above that players can select if they'd like to respond. NPCs will respond with different dialogue if chosen.
changedWhen Frei talks, or other characters, they will have their own voice. Which is an instrument. The instruments will play with the text while it is typing. It will randomly choose a voice line for the specific character, meaning if the voice is a guitar, it will choose between 5 different musical lines to play while dialogue is playing. Instead of silence playing. I also suck at voice acting and I feel voice acting wouldn't work for this game. The style wouldn't work in my opinion. Music speaks more words than.. Well, words.

addedI haven't worked on this yet, but this is a mechanic I plan on adding. NPCs can sometimes have side objectives, it is something that can give depth to Frei, adding more to his character and his lore. This is something for his lore and the achievement hunters. I plan on adding some more to this. There is a lot I need to add to the game before actually doing the side objective stuff. Such as maybe finishing the main game stuff. Or maybe actually finishing the maps first. Yeah, I'll do that. (Don't worry, I know what I'm gonna do, just jokes.)
addedFrei stumbles upon two people arguing, someone who is a goat, and someone else who is the goats friend. The goat has leaves all over his mouth, and they are arguing over it. The goats friend was mentioning that they just bought a new plant. Those leaves were apart of his new plant.

  • Talking with NPCs. Frei can talk with NPCs around the world, some of the NPCs can start side objectives. I'll talk about this soon.

  • Selecting certain dialogue as NPCs respond is something I'm still working on, so please keep with me on this. I plan on adding certain bubbles below or above that players can select if they'd like to respond. NPCs will respond with different dialogue if chosen.

  • Characters will have different animations in the game when speaking with Frei, and as well, Frei will have different animations when talking as well.

What are SIDE OBJECTIVES?

So, side stuff! What will you do? Let me give you an example. Heads up, I'm thinking this might be in the actual game, so SPOILERS for side objective!

Frei stumbles upon two people arguing, someone who is a goat, and someone else who is the goats friend. The goat has leaves all over his mouth, and they are arguing over it. The goats friend was mentioning that they just bought a new plant. Those leaves were apart of his new plant.

Frei comes in to help, only to intervene. If the player decides to help, you can either get a new plant, or settle the argument.

This will obviously go into depth, but for now, I'd figure this was super silly. An animal eating friend eating someone else's plants and couldn't help themselves. You may even be able to side with the goat because Frei, is a goat himself. He likes nature himself, but sometimes doesn't. This is a silly one, but there are other serious ones that go into depth for his character. This one will go into his character, but not too much as others will.

So, what am I working on now? Finishing the Abyss stuff. I know people are probably tired of seeing this area, but believe me, I've been polishing stuff instead of breaking stuff. I refuse to release anything broken. I start working on a new area, and when I test, something tends to mess up, and I get distracted and start fixing. Which is great and bad at the same time. Unity is a weird thing. I plan on fixing a lot on this game and not scraping by.

This is what it looks like now without lighting, but it is extremely undone. I plan on changing the trees in the final game. As well as the grass, as I'm not happy with it. I made the grass, but it can be better. The trees? They are a placeholder for now til' I make some trees of my own. These trees are okay, but could be better.

Well, I changed a lot in development. I plan on changing a lot more. I changed the camera angle, and now the camera follows the player. The color of the lighting is different than before, as it used to look like this:

This model is used in game, but the color is changed. if scrolled up, Frei is standing there, but finished! It's just BLUUUUE.

Now it looks all blue. I like blue. You'll see all types of colors in this show. While I don't have too much to share, I found some cool stuff about this game. I planned on making this game YEARS ago when I was 16-17? I dunno, I'll be honest, I'm bad with numbers. Really young. Though, inexperienced. (And super dumb as a person and did dumb things. which I plan on talking about in the game with Frei.) I did a prototype of this game. It's more of art and an example. Take a look.

I guarantee you, this game would've sucked if it was released back then, haha. Though, I still like the style. I based the style from Gregory's Horror Show. It had no game back then. I had no idea what I wanted to do with it back then, either. Now, this is a small open-world game where you can watch a funny little character struggle with his life, haha. (he also has cool powers for some reason.)

Last screenshot, I promise. I started finally working on the game late last year, and this is what it looked like. But, I restarted the project this year a few months ago. Only reusing some code. Like, just a few lines of code, haha. Never a full script. I completely started from scratch and didn't bring any models over. I just re-imported anything new or stuff I used before. But anything I'm using that is assets from the store that is also a model, don't worry. It's there temporarily. I want to add my own models. EVERYWHERE. This is my own game.
