More about the zombies

As we're part of the Steam event Zombies and Vampires Festival, we wanted to share more about the zombies in Vultures! Let's dive into it!

What are the zombie games/movies/books that inspired you for yours?

We're big fans of zombie media, and the original Resident Evil trilogy on PlayStation (1996–1999) was a huge starting point for us. Army of the Dead (2021) inspired the idea of a mission deep into a ruined city—core to Vultures’ gameplay. We also pulled from Romero’s Land of the Dead (2005) for its dystopian city vibe, and Planet Terror (2007) for its militarized zombies. Those references helped shape the tone and action of our world.

Will each level have its own zombies?

Each level introduces new enemies—some of them are zombies with unique appearances, but not all of them. Vultures also features mutants, which are more dangerous and behave very differently. We’ve planned three major areas where new zombie types will appear, each more deadly than the last.

What is the process behind creating a new zombie?

It usually starts with a gameplay idea—some new mechanic or behavior we want to explore. Once we have that, we design the look to visually communicate the threat to the player. We want you to feel how it plays just by looking at it.

Are some zombies more resistant to certain weapons/attacks?

Definitely. Vultures includes a variety of weapons, each with different effects. Some enemies are weak to specific types. For example, the SWAT zombie is heavily armored and resistant to melee attacks—but fire? That’ll bring him down fast.

What are the inspirations behind the explosive zombie?

This one started as two separate ideas: one was a zombie that spat acid like Mortal Kombat’s Reptile, the other was a fast runner that exploded on contact. We decided to merge them into a single enemy, and its final design took some visual cues from the Lying Figures in Silent Hill 2. It first appears in the military’ base, so we designed it to feel like it belonged there.

What are the inspirations behind the Scorpio zombie?

Technically, it’s a mutant we call Offspring. It has a crustacean-like body and a tail it uses to strike. Visually, we were inspired by the cursed crew from Pirates of the Caribbean (The Flying Dutchman), and conceptually, it evolved over multiple iterations. These Offspring are children of a major boss, which adds to their lore and threat level.

We have many more zombies we can't wait to share with you. Let us know which zombie you'd like to see in the game!
