Volcanoids changes
We’ve got another round of updates for the Island Preview branch! This patch focuses on smoothing out the Orchard Port loop, updating your journal, and giving you new tools to play with in the form of an upgraded Steam Roller and new trolley-crane mechanics. Let’s dive into the key changes!
Full change log at the end of this post.
Orchard Port Gameplay
Orchard Port gameplay has been improved and optimized. Access to the Sewers and Armory has been updated, and key placements now make much more sense. Many of the dark basements are now illuminated by dim light from dead COGs, while fake light sources have been removed. We've also replaced the placeholder pump and generator buttons with a proper model.
We’ve also streamlined the Drillship repair quests. While there's still more to do, this iteration is a big step closer to our vision.
Journal Expanded
Your guide is now up to date! Full journal coverage has been added for Orchard Port, Rosegate Port, and the Hydromechanicum, giving you clearer objectives and lore context as you explore these locations. There are also a few new sketches to check out in the journal.
Steam Roller Vehicle Upgrades
Driving the Steam Roller feels significantly better with overhauled handling mechanics. We’ve also introduced engine and movement audio alongside brand-new particle effects to give it proper weight and feedback. Additionally, we've added an alternative way to obtain the Steam Roller.
Softened Death Penalty
Dying no longer strips away your entire backpack inventory. You now retain weapons, upgrades, and a portion of your ammo and resources upon death, reducing frustrating runs back while keeping survival stakes meaningful. In addition, baseline inventory size has been increased from 35 to 40 slots.
Camera & Terrain Movement Fixes
Exploration feels substantially smoother. We’ve resolved the camera jitter and movement hiccups that occurred when walking over stairs, debris, railroads, and fallen COG units.
