Chervil is a man in a machine, with little memory of who he once was. He’s a brilliant scientist and engineer who was once hungry for knowledge to a fault. Nowadays he’s much more reserved, but few can blame him after what he’s been through. Chervil has his own history with Vernal’s father, and joins her on her quest to find him. Also he’s the only one who knows how to fly the ship, so that helps.
