Trash Goblin changes
TL;DR
We're bringing a huge free update to the base game in early May! It's a brand new tool and gameplay mechanic where you can 'recolour' every trinket and their parts at will, and slots into the game regardless of if you're new to it or have a 20hr+ save to continue from!
CREATIVE FREEDOM
This has been on our most-wanted list of features since we came up with the game back in 2023. And as we bring it to life, we really wanted to make sure you can do almost anything with this new system. So while you're not able to customise every element of a given trinket individually the flexibility it does offer is still completely bonkers!
Notice that this plush is made up of 6 individual trinkets all upcycled together, and each trinket has multiple sections. Let's focus on the head to explain it. The head trinket contains several sections, which you can remove and apply materials to!
Green Material (hair, eyebrows and pupils)
Blue Material (bandana and eyes)
Orange Material (face & nose, which just reads a little red)
So those groupings define just how fine-grained you can go - the only limitation is that for any trinket you can apply a maximum of 3 materials. These are applied/shared across almost any number of sections. We know from mucking about with it that you're going to show us some creations that will blow our socks off!
"NEW TOOL, HUGH DIS?"
Meet Hugh! This lil' thingy is the key to unlocking all this creativity.
No, we could not resist the pun. You know us by now. We almost went with Mat, but compromises were made.
Hugh is some kind of brass fish/bellows/magical paint orb mashup that we don't yet fully understand, but once we worked up a few concepts, it was clear which one the team fell in love with.
Hugh is still in development with some polish to come, but one thing we wanted to show off is how the various visual effect we're prepping all reflect the current active material:
Here the player has chosen a blue material, and so the trail of puffs shows as blue! That will also apply to the liquid inside Hugh's orb, plus the application/removal visuals we're working on. It's all very cool if I do say so myself, and we can't wait to show you more!
GAMEPLAY BREAKDOWN
Hugh is delivered to you early in the game (or at the earliest sensible opportunity if you're further along in the game), and you can use this new tool to remove colour/material from a section of any trinket, and then apply it to any other! The lore is that this tool harnesses Vibrance somehow to remove and store the material it is made of without destroying it the object itself... the mysteries of Silver City are myriad and wondrous!
One removing a material from a trinket, it is left as a plain wood version of itself - which is actually quite a nice look in an of itself! I've on doubt some players out there will take this to extremes!
Steam post image How much wood could a wood-chick chick if a wood-chick could chick wood?
You collect materials - all 30 of them! - by removing them from trinkets, and they are stored in your material shelf which is chock full of jars, and displayed when using Hugh. These show the amount of each material you have, and there are tooltips so you can see all the different names.
HOW IT PLUGS INTO THE GAME
Hugh is unlocked at the point where Aimon gives you access to the tools upgrades - around day 16-18 - or just as soon as the game can find a quiet moment if you have a save past that point in which case you'll get it within a day or two at most of continuing.
Due to this brand new mechanic being the 4th "trinket minigame" we wanted to stitch it into the fabric of the entire game, and we've ensured that trinkets will now appear in recoloured variants of themselves!
This is so we can basically seed the materials for you to collect a bit more evenly - not every material was used equally in the base game so we've added 100 of these variants, most of them ones you get earlier in the game so you can get cracking!
While playing, Random Stranger customers will sometimes ask for recoloured trinkets just like they do for upcycled etc. The rules are the same as for Upcycling too - unless they specifically say so, they'll be happy with your unique adjustments to materials!
Named customers won't have any quests changed in the base game, as it would mean a lot of rewriting and re-translating which takes time and money. But again, unless they specifically say so, you can go nuts with Hugh on their requests too!
When you do sell a Hugh'd up trinket - that is assuming you're not trying to colour coordinate everything you have in the game - these creative tweaks will net you a bit more gold per sale. That is, except for wood. Because wood is infinite/free/the default, it seems a bit weird to pay more for that.
We've also made sure you can Upcycle Hugh'd trinkets, and you can even use Hugh on already-upcycled trinkets. The only wrinkle being that each sub-trinket behaves independently when it comes to materials, so you need plenty of them to finish your masterpiece.
We're so excited to see what you do with this new tool. Hugh'd have thought we'd be adding such a game-changing mechanic so far on from launch, and for free?!
