The Mermaid Mask Case Files: Who’s Who Aboard the Mortuga Submarine #2

In the last post, we opened the case files on Symmetry Silkmoth, Godrik Gripp, J.D. Wirman, and Madam Tadpole. But there are still more suspects to meet aboard the Mortuga Submarine, and they’re just as worth side-eyeing. This time, we’re looking at the remaining characters caught up in the mystery of The Mermaid Mask: who they are, who voices them, and why you should probably keep one eyebrow raised at all times.

Let’s reopen the files.

Known for: Being the newly appointed captain of the Mortuga Submarine.

First impression: Bright-eyed, capable, and trying incredibly hard, Sinthia Seafoam is the sort of person who wants to be the best captain she can be. At just 18 years old, Sinthia is a nautical mechanic with a can-do attitude and the absolute confidence that she can handle everything. Probably.

She’s all heart, ambition, and a slightly-too-tight grip on the submarine’s wheel. She has the practical know-how to keep things running, and the wide-eyed optimism of someone who still believes enthusiasm can fix most problems. Maybe she's "fixed" the biggest problem of all.

Known for: Arriving aboard the Mortuga Submarine with the energy of someone who was absolutely not invited, but has decided the cargo hold is home now.

First impression: Mariana Moon is a countryside historian, storyteller, rambler, ambler, and fireside gambler. She is exactly the kind of person who hears the words “lost cursed submarine” and immediately starts packing her knapsack. Mariana has only just arrived, setting up camp in the cargo hold. Let’s just say her timing seems… questionable. To her, the Mortuga Submarine is a treasure trove of half-truths, rumours, old stories, and things people would probably rather stay buried. Which makes her fascinating, and possibly dangerous.

Inspired by a mix of Bilbo Baggins and his creator, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mariana brings wonder, wisdom, and just enough anarchy to make everyone else nervous.

Steam post image Known for: Dirk Dansom. Actor.

First impression: Dirk Dansom has everything a movie star needs: big hair, effortless charm, action hero biceps. Once a total unknown, Dirk shot to fame playing Marcus Mordoom in the movie adaptation of Hex of the Helmsman. Now he’s aboard the Mortuga Submarine doing research while waiting for the sequel.

Dirk has the easy charm of a Hollywood himbo, and is incredibly easy to like. People want to talk to him and that means they tell him things. Maybe things he shouldn't know. So yes, he may be lovely. But the real question is whether the leading man act is hiding something more... murderous.

Known for: Calling himself the Dream Doctor and studying the strange science of dreams, also known as oneirology.

First impression

Quiet, imposing, and deeply absorbed in his work, Doctor Zephyr cuts a striking figure among the rare instruments, strange devices, and curious inventions of his dream chamber.

He studies dreams

their meaning, their purpose, and what he calls “subconscious spirit transmissions.” Is it science? Is it nonsense? Or is it something much worse?

Aboard the Mortuga Submarine, a man who spends his time looking beneath the surface of people’s minds feels very worth watching. After all, if you know what someone dreams about, you might also know what they fear most, and how to use it against them.
