The big ones — Thunnus albacares, sometimes over a hundred kilos — hunt in low light. Before sunrise the surface boils with bait, and the tuna come up underneath, fast, in tight packs. You don't see the fish first. You see the birds. Terns and frigatebirds hover above the school, drop, spin, and scream. Anglers call them tellers. They're how you find the fish.

Trolling lures behind a boat at first light, against the gold horizon, you get one chance per session. The hookup is a punch. The fight is forty minutes. The trophy is a fish that weighs more than you do.
