Some mornings the sea is busy. This one isn't.
Rocky Island sits a half-day east of the home harbor. The lighthouse is older than anyone who tends it. Elsa keeps the light, polishes the brass like she's drying a friend's face, and writes the wind down before she speaks to anyone. Sail past at dawn and the water is the color of weak tea. The gulls have not yet decided to be loud. A herring shoal moves below the keel — slow enough to see, if you're paying attention.
Somewhere out there, someone is on the water right now. The kettle's on. The light is on. The fish are moving.
