Your mission is straightforward: Capture and hold two towns simultaneously.

Set across a large snow-laden battlefield covered with Allied defences, this mission is built around giving you the freedom to approach the operation in different ways, whether you prefer careful planning, aggressive assaults, or smaller covert actions behind enemy lines.

Your main objective is to capture and hold two towns located on opposite sides of the map at the same time. While you command one primary armoured force, two separate infantry detachments are already operating deeper inside contested territory. These isolated troops can either regroup with the main army to create a larger fighting force, or stay independent and carry out more commando-style operations behind enemy lines.

The map itself offers multiple routes. You can push cautiously through forests and defensive positions, launch flanking attacks, or slowly weaken Allied control before committing to a larger offensive.

Adding another layer of strategy are dynamic snowstorms that reduce visibility across the battlefield. These conditions can conceal troop movements, enable ambushes, and create opportunities for surprise attacks. On the other hand they also make reconnaissance and positioning far more dangerous.

Like all campaign maps in Sudden Strike 5, the goal is not to force you into one specific solution, but to create a battlefield where different strategies can naturally emerge through your choices.

Again, like in Map Recon #1, we want to share a few different approaches our Sudden Strike 5 team used to tackle this mission, illustrated through our highly advanced tactical visualization software: Microsoft Paint.

Strategy 1: Consolidated Army Steam post image

Strategy 1: Unify your forces and gain access to tactical bombers

Strength through unity.

Focus first on regrouping the infantry units in the northeast with the main army force. Along the way, securing the officer’s tent provides additional intelligence about enemy positions in the area.

Once your forces are united, begin advancing westward until the isolated paratrooper detachment can reach the radar station.

Capturing the radar unlocks tactical bomber support, allowing you to soften enemy defences before launching the final assault on the towns.

Strategy 2: Covert Ops Steam post image

Strategy 2: Use units already behind enemy lines to capture and secure locations

Win through disruption.

Rather than regrouping immediately, use the infantry already behind enemy lines to conduct covert operations across the battlefield.

Exploit terrain and limited visibility to ambush enemy forces, capture strategic positions, and secure abandoned vehicles to strengthen your army over time.

A major priority is eliminating the heavy artillery batteries overlooking the towns. Neutralising these positions creates openings for your main armoured force to advance with significantly reduced resistance.

Strategy 3: Operational Control Steam post image

Strategy 3: Use infantry troops to disrupt the enemy and consolidate your army

Control the battlefield piece by piece.

This hybrid approach combines disruption tactics with gradual force consolidation.

Begin by using the isolated paratroopers to eliminate one of the enemy artillery positions. Afterwards, move south to destroy the train bridge and military checkpoint, disrupting enemy logistics and reinforcement routes.

Meanwhile, the main army advances carefully along the edge of the map, capturing Prestige-generating locations and military outposts to build additional strength.

At the same time, the larger infantry detachment advances through the forest, capturing key locations and destroying defensive gates to open new attack routes.

Once opportunities arise, the separated forces can regroup and launch coordinated assaults on both town objectives while the remaining artillery positions are neutralised.

Your Strategy, Your Story

Elsenborn Ridge is designed to reward experimentation.

Whether you prefer overwhelming assaults, stealth-focused infiltration, or coordinated operational warfare, this mission provides the tools and flexibility to approach the battlefield your own way.

Every movement, every captured location, and every disruption of the enemy changes how the battle unfolds.

That remains at the heart of our map design philosophy: freedom through structure.

Good luck on the battlefields, Generals!
