changed🤓 Building a Best Friend: Chip, the Know-It-AllNo hero is complete without a faithful friend to guide them through their journey, and Milo is no exception! To balance Milo’s classic “silent protagonist” personality, the developers designed me - Chip! - to be is his total opposite: cheerful, chatty, and… though I hate to admit it… a little cowardly. (What can I say? Being bold is Milo’s job!)
changed🏘️ Crafting a Community: Bricktown’s NPCsSince a core pillar of Serial World’s gameplay is inspired by classic RPGs, it goes without saying that Milo’s home, Bricktown, needed to feel lively and populated. Thankfully, the devs already had several other characters in mind, and while we won’t share too much about them (gotta keep some things mysterious!), you can see some of their designs below. 👀

Hey, everyone! 👋 やあみんな!

It’s Chip, back again for another captivating Chip Chat! Today, we’re diving into something especially exciting - the process of how the team behind Serial World created the main cast for Bricktown, including myself and our brave protagonist, Milo!

There’s no time like the present, so let’s begin!

🎨 The Making of Milo: Our Brave Protagonist

The beginnings of Milo’s design stemmed from a variety of inspirations - early artworks by Osamu Tezuka and Akira Toriyama, media portrayals of 1980’s America (such as The Goonies or Stranger Things), and other famous young characters, like Goku (Dragon Ball series), Luke Triton (Professor Layton), and Ness (MOTHER).

The aim was to create a protagonist that balanced familiarity with innovation, where the influences were just present enough to feel comfortable, but not so overpowering that Milo couldn’t shine on his own. After receiving some general instructions from Taka (Game Director), Sho (Lead Designer) and the art team began working on iterations of Milo, tweaking each detail, until they finally settled on the version we know and love today, complete with big hat, backpack, and trusty Talisman pendant!

In his own words, Taka described Milo’s design as “embodying the sense of wonder you have in childhood - rather than having a heroic or valiant vibe, I hoped his design would say, ‘I may be a bit shy, but I’m still giving it my all!’ ” (If you ask me, Milo is very brave!)

🤓 Building a Best Friend: Chip, the Know-It-All

No hero is complete without a faithful friend to guide them through their journey, and Milo is no exception! To balance Milo’s classic “silent protagonist” personality, the developers designed me - Chip! - to be is his total opposite: cheerful, chatty, and… though I hate to admit it… a little cowardly. (What can I say? Being bold is Milo’s job!)

When considering inspirations, the developers looked to other well-known sidekicks in popular media - namely characters like Russell from Up, Chunk from The Goonies, and Yorki from Jojo Rabbit to embody the clumsy, lovable energy they were seeking.

Before long, the design for Chip would be finalized, and Serial World would finally have the trivia master it desperately needed!

What a good-looking character… and no, I’m not biased!

🏘️ Crafting a Community: Bricktown’s NPCs

Since a core pillar of Serial World’s gameplay is inspired by classic RPGs, it goes without saying that Milo’s home, Bricktown, needed to feel lively and populated. Thankfully, the devs already had several other characters in mind, and while we won’t share too much about them (gotta keep some things mysterious!), you can see some of their designs below. 👀

This character was initially designed to be Milo’s second friend, but the developers decided I was more than enough 😌

The inhabitants of Bricktown… do they know I’m listening to their gossip?

Coming Up Next: All About Anima!

We hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into the design process of Bricktown’s inhabitants! You can expect more behind-the-scenes artworks in our next Chip Chat, where we’ll share designs for the Anima of Serial World!
