Seasons of Solitude changes
Greetings, Survivors!
We’re excited to share a significant development milestone for Seasons of Solitude! In this update, we’ve established core gameplay systems that will serve as the foundation for your survival journey.
Here’s what’s new:
Base UI Design
The interface in Seasons of Solitude prioritizes clarity and ease of use, allowing players to quickly understand and manage resources, select actions, and monitor survival metrics. Designed with accessibility in mind, it ensures that all key information is clearly presented and easy to navigate, helping players focus on strategic decision-making without unnecessary complexity.
Action System
The Action System is a core mechanic that ensures every choice feels meaningful. Here's how it works:
- Base ActionsThese are actions available to you from the start, such as basic resource gathering or food. They are essential for survival and always accessible.
- Tool-Based ActionsUnlock more specialized actions by crafting new tools. For example, tools like spears enable hunting, while water purifiers allow you to process contaminated water. These actions expand your capabilities as you progress.
Durability System: The availability of certain actions is managed through a durability system, creating strategic trade-offs and encouraging efficient use of resources:
- Always UsableSome actions, such as basic gathering or water collection, are always available and do not rely on tools or durability limits.
Auto-Replenishing Durability: Actions that rely on stamina or natural cycles, like setting traps or scavenging for animal bones, have limited uses per turn but automatically replenish over time, ensuring periodic access.
Shared Tool Durability: Advanced actions tied to crafted tools—such as hunting with a spear or processing materials—consume the durability of those tools with each use. Once depleted, the tool must be repaired or replaced to continue using its associated actions.
Progression Tree
The progression tree in Seasons of Solitude is designed to guide players through gradual growth while offering meaningful choices that enhance their survival capabilities. It features four distinct categories, each focusing on a different aspect of prehistoric survival:
- Enhanced GatheringUnlock upgrades that improve your efficiency in collecting essential resources like food, water, and raw materials. Examples include increased resource yields, faster gathering, or unlocking access to rare biome-specific resources.
Hunting & Trapping: Gain advanced techniques and tools to secure food more effectively. Unlock better traps, enhance your ability to hunt larger prey, and utilize hunted animals for crafting or survival needs.
Resource Tools: Craft specialized tools to process resources more efficiently. Examples include sharpening stones for tool maintenance, crafting stations for advanced items, or tools to extract rare materials from specific biomes.
Survival Upgrades: Unlock critical skills and techniques to survive harsh environments. Examples include building fire pits to cook food, crafting insulated shelters, or improving stamina and recovery rates.
Many unlocks within the progression tree serve as prerequisites for advanced capabilities, creating a logical flow of growth. For instance, crafting a basic spear might lead to unlocking advanced hunting techniques, while gathering upgrades could expand access to rare biome-specific resources. The system is designed to reward thoughtful planning, allowing players to specialize in areas that suit their survival strategy.
These systems are critical building blocks as we continue to shape Seasons of Solitude into a strategic survival experience. Check out the screenshots below for a sneak peek into the game’s current state, and stay tuned for more updates as we refine and expand these features.
