Quest for the Albatross changes
Devlog #5 – One Year of Development 🎉
It’s hard to believe, but Quest for the Albatross has officially been in development for a whole year! This devlog is going to be a little different—we want to take a step back, look at how far we’ve come, and give you a peek at what’s next.
🌱 Humble Beginnings
Quest for the Albatross started as nothing more than a small physics test. We borrowed placeholder art from an older project and focused entirely on nailing the feel of a good golf swing. No menus, no opponents—just the foundations of what would eventually grow into our game. From those early tests, the project grew into something much bigger.
🎮 A Playable Demo
Fast forward, and the difference is night and day. We now have professional custom artwork, original music, and polished gameplay that you can try out for yourself in our public demo. It’s been amazing to share our progress with you all and see your feedback shape the game.
🖼️ Art Progress
The art team has been hard at work bringing the world of Ace to life. Three full biomes— grassland, mountain, and volcano —are complete, each with unique tilesets and hazards. Using those assets, we’ve already built three full courses, with plenty more on the way.
✨ Magic on the Fairway
One of our biggest design goals has always been to blend golf with strategic spellcasting. Our base magic system is already functional, with about a dozen spells in the game. Ultimately, we’re planning for 50+ spells, giving players tons of creative ways to change the tide of a match.
🏆 Game Modes
We never wanted Quest for the Albatross to be “just” golf. That’s why we’re building four game modes:
Classic Match = the standard golf game
Race = an action packed race to the hole where only your time matters
Siege = where you will defend yourself from waves of ferocious enemies
Puzzle = where you will put your skills to the test to solve complex challenges
Match, Race, and Siege are already in the demo, and we’re continuing to refine and balance them while Puzzle Mode is being left for future development. Each mode adds a unique twist to the core mechanics, and we’re excited to see which ones become your favorites.
⛰️ What’s Next
Looking forward, we’ve got some exciting milestones ahead:
Story & Cutscenes: The full game story has recently been completed! We’re now writing the script for cutscenes and bringing our characters to life. We think you are really going to enjoy the story and world we are creating.
Abbott’s Stream: Our first full town is in the works. This is Abbott's Stream, an idyllic little river town. This will be a hub for NPCs, shops, and story moments and a place we expect players will love.
- Gameplay RefinementsWe are also refining, optimizing, and expanding our main gameplay. Smarter AI, new spells, and more polished Siege Mode battles are all in progress.
- Demo UpdatesWe’ve got some new content planned for the demo soon—we're not quite ready to talk about it yet, so keep an eye out for future updates. 😉
🎉 One Year Strong
This first year has been an incredible journey. We’re so proud of what the team has accomplished, and we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. Thank you all for following our progress and supporting us—it really means the world to us.
We can’t wait for you to discover the magic of golf in Quest for the Albatross.
Until next time,
— Austin Lane Game Director / Programmer
