changedHere's a glimpse of the updated title track and one of the in-game tracks. I've also changed how the game selects a track to play, opting to always play the title track (Positron) on the main menu, and transitioning to a 'random' track when entering gameplay. This keeps the menu and launch of the game consistent (something I had always intended to do):
changedBack in the XNA days, it was common to see people offering their artistic services in exchange for a profit share of eventual sales. I signed up Chris Walker on such a deal, and he created the music for Positron, many years ago! Of course, the XNA version never got released, and the Steam version here was in limbo for a long time, but now the game is out, people are playing it, and listening to the game's soundtrack. Chris contacted me a little while back, saying he wanted to revisit the music and remaster the entire soundtrack. I kinda feel bad for not even being able to pay him for his efforts yet (the game hasn't made much money, and there's a minimum threshold to trigger his 10% payout), but we are VERY close to that now! Chris was super enthusiastic about wanting to update the tracks, applying techniques he's learnt in the years since they were originally created. In his own words: "12 years ago I answered an ad on Microsoft's XNA forums; the result of which was an evergreen relationship with Retroburn and about 25 tracks for 3 games. Of those, Positron has endured - revisiting the tracks for the game's release has been a pleasure.
addedI was initially surprised at how decent they sounded 12 years on; I had much less experience then and so approaching the tracks now almost felt like re-mastering someone else's work. In that time of course, my tastes had changed, and re-mastering quickly morphed into a process of re-arrangement and re-mixing, as well as modernising and creating consistent masters. I work 100% in Logic, and thanks to Apple's consistency over the years, all the legacy plugins and soft synths that have shipped with the software still remain. I had to replace some 3rd party plugins I no longer had, but this went some way to modernising the general presentation. My first port of call was making the drum and bass sounds across all of the tracks consistent, so that they felt like they had the same bedrock of sound. With that work done, I began to address some of the more fundamental issues with the music; namely repetition of ideas that could be wearing on the ear (and psyche!) over time. The result is, I think, an evolution of my original ideas from 2012. My particular favourite is 'Scyth'; which now has a very groovy, synth-leaden outro. The OST is now available at https://colourofsounduk.bandcamp.com/ and there are new tracks in production that will be added as they're completed. Thanks for listening!"
changedChris and I have also never met in person before, mostly discussing the soundtrack via email, chat, discord or other means. Our public demo at MCM Comic Con / EGX Birmingham last weekend however gave us a chance to actually meet up in person for the first time!

It was great to meet Chris, and even better to see him enjoying the game (and his own soundtrack):
