About the equipment system

In this series, we want to give you a closer look at how equipment works in PAINLAND and how we approach designing it. We start with the most basic category - HANDMADE WEAPONS.

These are weapons the player builds using whatever they can find in the world. No factories - no late-game blueprints. At this stage, simplicity, material availability, and the ability to quickly craft something that actually helps you survive are what matter most.

When designing this category, we focus on making every weapon meaningful at the start of the game - cheap to craft, intuitive, and giving a real sense of progression from the very first minutes.

Below are a few examples.

WEAPON #1 - Scrap Bow

Built from bent metal plates, steel wire, and improvised joints held together with screws and tape.

Heavier and less flexible than a classic bow - but durable and made from easily available materials.

Offers stable damage and allows for ranged combat without revealing your position. Slower draw and lower precision - but still effective at range.

WEAPON #2 - Scrap Crossbow

Made from metal profiles, steel cables, and a simple trigger mechanism. The reinforced build allows for more powerful shots - at the cost of mobility and reload speed.

More accurate and stable than the bow - but noticeably slower. Delivers higher impact and better control at range, though every shot needs to count.

WEAPON #3 - Beast

Assembled from a fuel gun, caulking guns, a screwdriver, and other random tools fused into one heavy construction. Chaotic and improvised - but surprisingly effective.

Fires massive projectiles with tremendous force. Heavy and loud - it draws attention and requires good timing. Not precise or fast - but one well-placed shot can end a fight.

WEAPON #4 - Basic Machine Carbine “Tuf Tuf”

An improvised automatic weapon made from salvaged parts.

Steel frame - drum magazine - makeshift stock wrapped in tape.

Crude, loud, and inaccurate.

But once it starts firing - it does exactly what it was built to do.

This is just the beginning.

Over time, we’ll reveal more elements of PAINLAND - weapons, gear, tools, characters, animals, robots, and the world itself.

What you see now is only a fragment of what’s coming.
