Obscurium changes
He hunts the hunters.
CAPELOBO.
The legend
He is told in Amazonas, Maranhão and Pará. Folklorists sometimes call him the werewolf of the north, which is close but misses the part that matters. He does not turn into a wolf and stop there. He is a wolf that also becomes a giant anteater. The snout comes forward, the mouth disappears, and what is left is a face built for reaching inside things.
He hunts hunters. He kills them and drinks the blood. In the tellings there is exactly one way to kill him back, and it is to hit him in the navel.
The name is probably indigenous. Capê, which means broken bone, and lobo.
What he does on the table
Two forms, and no stat block on either one. The anteater goes for your hand. It reaches in, takes what you were holding, and you spend the rest of the fight playing around a hand you cannot count on. The wolf does not care about your hand at all. It hits you, hard, and it keeps hitting. The anteater in the legend is the one with the long reach. The wolf is the one that is simply a predator. That is how we decide these things.
Where he is weak
Play aggressive. He punishes hesitation, and the player who is willing to eat some damage to close the fight faster tends to win it. Defending is how the fight gets long, and long is where he lives.
Dev note
Creatures in Obscurium have no health number and no attack number. There is nothing to grind down. The design question was never how much health should this boss have. It was what does this thing do to people in the stories, and how does that become something you feel on the table. More on that in two weeks.
What is still wrong with him
Both forms read correctly, but they could be more themselves, and we know it. The model is also being rebuilt, so the Capelobo you fought is not the Capelobo you will be fighting.
One last thing. The second build put the spirits of old hunters into the run. Read back what the Capelobo does for a living.
Which creature do you want next, and what should it do to your deck?
The second half of that question is the one we actually need. Playtest keys go out in waves, and signups are open: https://obscurium.firstlook.gg/signup/playtest-2
